18-Year-Old Savagely Beats Grandmother

On October 10, 2016, 69-year-old Joyce Ann Courson hid a beer from her 18-year-old grandson, Dylan Nicholas Broughman, while he showered. The enraged teen could not locate the beer after his shower. His grandmother refused to tell him where she had put the beer. Enraged, Broughman began pounding his fists into the wall, screaming, “It’s all your fault!” As his grandmother walked down the hallway, Broughman attacked her. He punched his grandmother with his fists and when she fell to the floor, he began savagely punching and kicking the woman.

Roommate Calls Police

Dillion Ross, the 22-year-old roommate, heard the two arguing followed by banging, but initially stayed out of the matter because he told police they frequently argued. Ross intervened when he heard Courson screaming for help. Broughman had left the home by this time. He rushed to her aid and called for help.

Courson was transported to a local hospital. She provided police with a full account of what happened in the home between herself and grandson before passing away from her injuries several days later.

Brougham Says He Blacked Out From Anger

Police located Broughman walking down the road a short time later. He was transported to the police station where he stated that he did not remember what happened because he blacked out when he became too angry. Police charged Brougham with aggravated assault but added murder charges after Courson passed away.

A Troubled Family

Tracey Broughman, Dylan’s mother, had been arrested for battery against Courson earlier in the year. The charges against her were later dropped. She defended Dylan after the murder, stating he was not directly responsible.

“He didn't actually kill her, her heart stopped. That’s what cause her death, we took her off life support.”

She went on to say that she was unsure how to feel because she lost both her son and her mother. She also told police that Dylan had an anger problem.

Broughman has more than a dozen arrests in the Jacksonville area, including drug charges and prostitution charges. In 2017, she escaped jail after removing an ankle monitoring bracelet. She was in a work-release program after sentencing on bank fraud charges.

Dylan’s paternal grandmother, Evelyn Stepka, told Action News Jax:

“When you have a crackhead mother coming and going, being arrested every month -how do they expect this kid to grow up normal?”

Conviction & Sentencing

Courson was sentenced to 20-years, six months in prison. He serves his time at the Charlotte Correctional Institution in Punta Gorda, Florida. His current release date is scheduled for March 22, 2036.

My Thoughts

I’m an asshole, but such a calm person. Understanding this level of anger isn't within my capabilities. Although, once you realize your anger is this extreme, it's up to you to get help before hurting other people. Admitting our wrongs is hard but when we deny, cover up and blame, this happens. I’m certain Dylan struck a plea deal to get 20-years and will be out in 10 or less. Our judicial system places such little value on human life. I hate it here.
