We’ve been married seven years. I can tell you which of his t-shirts he will ruin in the wash and the exact face he makes when the Wi-Fi drops. I did not think I would be the woman who, on a random weeknight, said, “I want you to fuck me in the ass,” and then immediately wanted to take it back.
I didn’t take it back.
He looked at me like I’d asked him to refinance the house. Not disgusted. Just… recalculating. We were already in bed. The good lamp was on, which suddenly felt like too much light. I laughed because I didn’t know what else to do with my mouth.
“You’re serious.”
“I think so.”
That was the whole speech. I had more in my head — how long I’d been curious, how I was tired of treating that part of my body like a locked cabinet, how I’d watched enough of other people’s sex that the idea had stopped being a joke — and none of it came out. What came out was I think so, which is a stupid way to start something that is going to hurt.
He didn’t jump on it. I loved him for that and also wanted him to hurry up before I changed my mind.
We had lube. We bought it two months earlier “just in case” and then hid it behind the extra toothpaste like a couple of teenagers. He got it. I got a towel I actually liked and then regretted sacrificing. I went to the bathroom and did the unglamorous part nobody puts in the fantasy, came back, and lay on my stomach because that was the position I had pictured, which turned out to be the wrong one.
His hand on my lower back was familiar. His finger, slick and careful, was not.
I clenched. Of course I clenched. You tell yourself you’ll be relaxed and then a fingertip shows up where fingertips do not usually show up and your body slams the door. He waited. I breathed into the mattress and felt ridiculous. Married seven years and I was blushing into a pillowcase because my husband was touching my ass like it mattered.
“Okay,” I said, which did not mean I was okay. It meant keep going before I start talking again.
The finger went in. Not far. Far enough that I made a sound I did not plan and then tried to pretend I hadn’t. It burned in a small, precise way. Not drama. Just a tight ring of heat and the weird awareness that he could feel me from a direction I couldn’t see. He moved slowly. I stared at the headboard slats and counted them like an idiot.
A second finger was worse and then it wasn’t. The stretch got louder. I told him to stop and he stopped and I said don’t stop, which is an unfair thing to do to a person, and he was patient about that too. By the time he took his fingers out I was shaking a little in the thighs, the way I do when I’m nervous and turned on at the same time and can’t pick one.
Then it was him.
I thought I was ready because fingers had already been there. I was not ready. He put the head against me and I understood the difference immediately. Blunt. Heavier. The kind of pressure that makes your brain go absolutely not while the rest of you stays put. He told me to push out, which felt backwards and rude and, irritatingly, correct.
“Wait.”
He waited. I could feel him wanting to move and not moving. That might have been the most married part of the whole night — him holding still because I asked, breathing against my shoulder like we were in line at the bank.
I let the breath out. The burn went sharp. For a second I thought I’d made a mistake, the kind you can’t laugh off in the morning. Then the muscle gave. Not a movie give. A slow, hot slip, and suddenly he was inside me in a way he had never been inside me, and my mouth opened on nothing.
It was a lot.

People say full. Full is the clean word. It felt like being occupied. Like there was no spare room left in my body. I could feel him higher than made sense, a pressure that sat behind everything else and made my clit ache without anyone touching it. I grabbed the sheet. I think I said fuck several times, not as dirty talk, as reporting.
“You want me to pull out?”
“No. Just don’t move yet.”
We stayed like that. Me getting used to the fact of him. Him stroking my hip like I was a horse that might bolt. I started laughing again, helpless, because the situation was insane: the towel, the lamp, my husband halfway in my ass on a weeknight, me trying to remember how to breathe.
“This is so stupid,” I said.
“You’re doing fine.”
“Don’t compliment me right now.”
He laughed into my back. The laugh moved him inside me and I stopped thinking it was funny.
When he finally moved it was tiny. Out a little, in a little. The drag of it was filthy in a quiet way lube sound, skin, the awareness that I was open and staying open. It hurt and then the hurt changed temperature. I wouldn’t call it pleasure yet. I would call it attention. My whole body had narrowed to that one place. I couldn’t make a polite face. I didn’t try.
I got on my elbows because my neck was done. He went a little deeper and I said wait again, then okay, then a sound that wasn’t a word. My legs wouldn’t hold still. Every time I clenched it got tighter and worse and better. He reached around and put his fingers on me, light, and that was the cheat code I didn’t know I needed. Front and back talking to each other. I came harder than the situation deserved, shaking, clenched around him, surprised into it, a little angry at how well it worked.
He came after, careful, not slamming, one hand flat on the bed beside my face. I felt it and also felt the odd tenderness of him trying not to wreck me on the first try.
When he pulled out I made a noise I will not be describing at dinner. Empty in a new way. Slick. Open. I stayed face-down for a minute because standing up felt like a project. He got the washcloth. He always gets the washcloth. That part was the same as every other time and also not.
“You all right?”
“I feel like I sat on a secret.”
He kissed the back of my hip. I let him. I was sore in a specific, humming way, the kind of sore you check for the next morning when you sit down at the table with your coffee and try not to make a face.
I thought I would feel different in some big, essay way. What I felt was simpler. I had asked my husband for something I’d been too proud and too chicken to ask for, and he had gone slow, and I had taken it, and I had liked it more than the scared part of me wanted to admit.
The lube went back behind the toothpaste.
I already know it’s coming out again.
