All Hollows Eve

October madness. I made it worse.

Enchanting remnants of autumn leaves - the mystical allure of Halloween...two worlds colliding in glorious shades of amber, purple, and reddish hues.

Here the veil between reality and magic grows thin, and the air smells of pumpkin pies and impish ghouls.

Under the Harvest Moon masquerades, autumn arrived with a flourish. The trees, once lush and green, now wore autumnal garbs of crimson, gold, and russet.

The air crackled with anticipation, for the Harvest Moon was approaching, and with it, the legendary All Hallows Eve.

People tended herb gardens, chanting ancient incantations...coaxing magic from the soil. Pumpkins vied for attention. It's the way of the old world... hidden paths, forgotten spells, and the honoring the season.

The moon waxed, the villagers prepared for the masquerade. Costumes of leaves and spider silk emerged.

I spread the rumor of a mysterious guest who always arrived uninvited...masked, hunting for willing souls.

I spoke of an Enchanter, a spirit of the forest, and other lost souls seeking redemption. People laughed, believing it to be just another Halloween prank.

So did I.

It is the eve of the Harvest Moon - Gay gowns, crimson velvet, taffeta and humble cotton...masks, carved from maple leaves and fanciful things, clung to their faces like a second skin. The festivities begun.

The masquerade unfolded in a glade bathed in moonlight. Villains, fairies, ghosts, pirates, murderers, victims with knives plunged into their guts, blood dripping from skewered necks... innocent angels smiled gloriously. All twirled as laughter echoed through the ancient trees. They marched door to door with fanciful buckets, bags and cute pink pails, coercing candies and sweet treats from neighbors and strangers all.

Suddenly ....A man in a midnight-blue cloak appeared, his eyes as deep as the night sky. His glare sending shivers down their spines, and they happily wondered if he was the elusive Autumn Enchanter.

As the clock struck midnight, the music shifted...a haunting melody played, it tugged at heart strings...beckoning.

The crowd fell silent...the masked figure emerged from the shadows. The mask a masterpiece...a swirl of black and purple, as if the very essence of autumn had been ensnared.

The Autumn Enchanter glided towards them, two gloved hands outstretched.

“May I have this dance"? It whispered, voice like rustling leaves. For the one entity embodied many voices and forms, they shifted from one to the other...between good and bad...wonderful and wicked.

The world blurred, and suddenly, all the costumed figures were transformed.

What had I done?

They glided across seasons...the crunch of leaves underfoot, the frosty air of winter, the rebirth of spring. They glimpsed strange realms...the faerie courts, the ghostly glens, and the heart of the ancient oak. they felt the pulse of magic, the rhythm of life itself.

When the night finally drew to a close, the Enchanters removed their masks.

“You’ve blended with the seasons. Now you must choose: stay in the mortal world or become essences of the in-between".

Everyone hesitated, torn between fancy and duty. They remembered their loved ones and tried to choose the mortal world. The man in the midnight cloak cackled awfully...everyone disappeared and nothing would ever again be as it once was.

It has been years now...yet the people never forgot the magic...the rustle of leaves, the scent of mystery, and the promise of eternal autumn. And every year, when the Harvest Moon rose, they danced, the voices appeared and again whisked them away to the magical places.

They blame me...yet they had no choice. No matter how I tried... I could not stop the creature that I had conjured that ominous Halloween night, a long time ago.

And so, the legend lived on...a tale of Halloween magic, entangled with autumn’s amber, purple, and red.

The village now shuns me...calls me an outcast - a witch.

...For the creature never takes me...It leaves me to do its bidding...choosing which souls to prepare for its Halloween fare.

I made it worse...and I don't know how to fix it.
