7 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Wasted My 20s
My life story

I am 28 now. If I could sit down with my 20-year-old self for 10 minutes, I would say 7 things. Not motivational quotes. Real things that would have saved me money, time, and heartbreak. I wasted about 5 years doing things that felt smart at the time but were actually distractions. If you are 18 to 28 right now, read this slowly. It might save you years too. 1. Money follows skills, not hours When I was 21, I was obsessed with “quick money.” I tried dropshipping, crypto signals, betting tips, reselling shoes. I jumped every month. I worked hard, but I was scattered. The turning point came when I picked one skill and stayed with it for 12 months. Mine was writing. I wrote every day. I studied copy. I gave free work to 3 people to build proof. After month 6, people started paying me. After month 12, I was charging 5x more than before. Lesson: The world does not pay you for being busy. It pays you for being valuable. Pick one skill. Writing, design, sales, video editing, coding, speaking. Learn it, practice it, sell it. Stop chasing 10 things at once. Go 1 inch wide and 1 mile deep. If I had done this at 20 instead of 25, I would be 5 years ahead financially. 2. Your circle is your future Look at your 5 closest friends right now. What do they talk about most? Gossip? Football? Other people’s business? Money? Growth? I used to have 10 friends who only talked about parties and who was dating who. I copied that life without thinking. My mindset, my spending, my goals all looked like theirs. Stuck. At 24, I changed 3 of those friends. I did not fight with anyone. I just spent more time with people building something. Within 90 days, my ideas changed. I started a side project. I read more books. I stopped spending money to impress. You will become the average of the 5 people you talk to most. Audit your circle. If someone drains your energy, drains your money, or drains your time, create distance. You do not owe anyone access to your future. 3. Silence is expensive I have a list of regrets in my notes app. Half of them start with “I never said...” I never told that girl I liked her. I never asked that boss for a raise. I never apologized to my brother. I never pitched that client because I was scared of “no.” Here is what I learned: 90% of the time, the worst answer you get is no. The best answer changes your life. Courage is not loud. Sometimes courage is one message. One call. One honest conversation. If you feel something, say it. If you want something, ask. Silence costs more than rejection ever will. Rejection lasts days. Regret can last years. 4. No one is coming to save you I waited. For a mentor. For a loan. For a lucky break. For someone to “discover” me. I told myself, “When I get the right opportunity, I will start.” The opportunity never came. The day I stopped waiting was the day things moved. I started with zero. I used my phone. I used free Wi-Fi. I wrote on my wall. I sold small before I sold big. Nobody owes you a start. Your parents, government, friends, or that influencer you follow are not responsible for your life. You are. Start embarrassing. Start broke. Start small. But start. Momentum beats motivation every time. 5. Your phone is stealing your years Be honest. How many hours do you spend scrolling a day? 2? 3? 4? Let’s do math. 3 hours a day x 365 days = 1,095 hours a year. That is 45 full days. You just lost a month and a half. In 45 days, you can learn video editing. You can write a book. You can get fit. You can build a business. At 23, I deleted Instagram and TikTok for 30 days. Nothing collapsed. But I gained 90 hours. I used it to learn writing and get my first paid client. That client changed my money that year. Your phone is not evil. But an unguarded phone is a thief. Put a limit on apps. Replace scroll time with skill time. Your future self is watching you right now. 6. Health is not later. It is now When you are 20, you feel like you can eat anything and sleep 4 hours. I thought, “I will gym later. I will eat right later.” Later became back pain. Low energy. Low confidence. Bad skin. No stamina. Your body is your first business. If it fails, everything else fails. You do not need a gym membership. You need 20 minutes a day. Walk. Push-ups. Squats. Drink water. Sleep 7 hours. Eat less sugar. The 30-year-old version of you will either thank you or curse you. Choose now. Health is not vanity. It is energy, confidence, and more years to build your life. 7. Consistency beats talent I am not the smartest guy in my group. I am not the most talented writer. I am just the guy who did not quit on day 30. Most people quit at day 14. They post 5 articles, get 12 views, and say “it is not working.” They go to the gym for 2 weeks, don’t see abs, and stop. But the world rewards the person who is still there after everyone else leaves. If you write 1 article a week for 52 weeks, you will be ahead of 95% of people. If you work out 3 times a week for a year, you will have a new body. If you save a little every month for a year, you will have something. Talent starts. Consistency finishes. Outlast your competition. Final word to my younger self If you only take one thing from this, take this: Do not waste your 20s waiting to feel ready. You will never feel 100% ready. Pick a skill. Protect your time. Protect your body. Protect your circle. Speak up. Start now. Stay consistent. Ten years from now, you will not remember the parties you missed. You will remember the chances you took. Which number hit you hardest? Comment it below. I read every reply, and I want to know which one you needed today.
