Portugal wins on penalties following a 0-0 draw

Portugal and Slovenia squared off in the round of 16 at Frankfurt Arena in Germany on Monday as Euro 2024 action resumed.

With several missed shots during the day, including a penalty kick that Slovenia's Jan Oblak saved in extra time, Cristiano Ronaldo had a difficult day. After the save, Ronaldo was overcome with emotion. However, he found redemption on Portugal's first penalty shootout attempt, which set the tone for a swift 3-0 triumph that saw them progress to the quarterfinals with the assistance of goalie Diogo Costa.

In the quarterfinals, Kylian Mbappé's France will take on Ronaldo's Portugal.

Portugal advances in penalties!

Diogo Costa started things off right for Portugal, keeping the momentum going from his incredible save during extra time. He dove to the right to make the save and give his squad the advantage.

After that, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a huge penalty goal to give Portugal a 1-0 lead. This time, he defeated Jan Oblak.

Costa guesses correctly and dives left to thwart Slovenia's second effort to stop it.

Bruno Fernandes entered the game, freezing Oblak with a lower left cross to give Portugal a two-goal lead.

Once more, Costa diverted Slovenia's strike, and his heartbeat seemed as calm as ever. This time, it was directed towards the bottom right corner of the goal by Benjamin Verbič.

Portugal's third kick was successful when Bernardo Silva tricked Oblak, securing the win and advancing Portugal to face France in the quarterfinals!

Pepe nearly became the scapegoat of the game after losing the ball on his side of the field, opening a chance for Benjamin Šeško to go one-on-one against goalkeepr Diogo Costa. Šeško decided to go lower right shelf, but Costa came up huge for Portugal with a game-preserving save.

Things got chippy late into extra time, and Slovenia's manager Matjaž Kek was sent off the pitch with a direct red card.

5:33a ET Oblak '108 has it easy: Portugal 0 Slovenia 0.

Following his stop of Cristiano Ronaldo's rocket, Jan Oblak found it easier to handle a soft header such as this one. With easily, he tips the ball over the goalpost to make the save.

Cristiano Ronaldo has had a difficult day and broke down in tears when his penalty was stopped. In the huddle that followed the first half of extra time, Ronaldo was visibly in tears.

How. A. Save! Cristiano Ronaldo lined up for a penalty kick as it appeared certain that Portugal would be awarded one for a foul in the box. However, he did so against Jan Oblak, a legendary goalkeeper.

And it was Oblak who prevailed, leaving Ronaldo inconsolable as he lost on what was certainly his best effort of the day. Three of the nine penalties that Ronaldo has been awarded in international play have not been converted.

5:10 a.m. ET Slovenia in motion: Portugal 0 Slovenia

Slovenia demonstrated strong attacking tactics in the opening minutes of extra time, aiming to avoid having to use penalty kicks. However, Portugal's defense refused to budge.

5:00a ET ' 89: Portugal 0, Slovenia 0. Ronaldo quit.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo's failure to score on this one-on-one opportunity in front of Slovakia's goalkeeper, Portugal supporters were left feeling disappointed.

4:18 ET Another missed free kick: Portugal 0, Slovenia 0.

Cristiano Ronaldo is perpetually unlucky. In the game, he missed his third attempt at a free kick. In 60 attempts at the position in international play, he has only converted one.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo's Portugal teammates found more trouble of their own, missing an ideal opportunity to put away a goal.

4:45 p.m. Eastern Time One-on-one '61: Slovenia 0 – Portugal

During a furious counterattack, Slovenia had what may have been its greatest chance of the day, but Benjamin Šeško missed his shot wide right.

4:40 p.m. ET - Held off '57: Slovenia 0 / Portugal 0.

Portugal persisted in their aggressive play, but they were unable to break the ice with a goal.

4:33 PM Eastern Time - Lightning strike in '55: Slovenia 0 Portugal 0.

Cristiano Ronaldo again fails to make a play. But with the pace he applied to it, he put Jan Oblak in a difficult situation to stop this one.

4:16 p.m. ET - Make it wide '45+3: Slovenia 0 Portugal

Portugal was stuck in a deadlock for the first half, which was unfortunate because they had several opportunities to score, including these mishandled attempts right before the half-time siren.

Slovenia counterattacked quickly, reaching the box in only a few seconds, but France reacted quickly, forcing the ball out of bounds for a corner attempt.

Cristiano Ronaldo is among the best players when it comes to free kicks, but this attempt from just outside the box was unsuccessful once more. And following the mishap, he was beside himself.

Just can't seem to find the net, Cristiano Ronaldo! The legendary striker stood up to attempt another heading, but it sailed straight into the goalkeeper's ready hands.

In the first few minutes of the match, Portugal enjoyed numerous opportunities, and Cristiano Ronaldo was a major factor in the majority of them. However, after a ball was thrown into the box, CR7 was unable to score on a jumping attempt once more, and Bruno Fernandes was unable to score on a sliding try as well.

Ronaldo turned away at 3:24 PM ET. Portugal 0, Slovenia 0.

After being denied a goal by a beautiful slide tackle by a Slovenian defender, Cristiano Ronaldo was requesting a penalty.

A quick run of four: Portugal 0 Slovenia 0.

Portugal was keen to get the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo, who hasn't scored yet in this tournament. Minutes into the game, it did, but the legend of Portugal was aiming for a crosser that was a little too high. Rafael Leão attempted to clear the pass, but his shot also missed the mark.

2:52 PM Eastern Time - Scene before the game

The Portuguese players gazed in amazement as France scored the game-winning goal to advance to the quarterfinals. Portugal is aware that, should it defeat Slovenia, France will be its next challenger.

Slovenia's supporters, however, were keen to take all precaution to make sure it didn't occur.

Perhaps some "FOX Soccer Now" as well? The crew prepares us for what promises to be an exciting battle.
