The Realms of Darkness

Beginnings & Endings

“You’re a witch!”

Everyone laughed at Xavier’s joke, but that was the truth of the matter. Mia’s mother was a witch, and therefore, Mia could not ride the dragons. At least not yet.

Exasperated, Sofia grumbled, “Honestly, it’s about time someone traveled past the forbidden lake and tried to meet with the dragon council. Why should Mia be cursed to this day?”

Luther raised his eyebrows and suggested, “Perhaps, my daughter, this is the type of mission you will be willing to fight for.”

“Damn right,” she said, exhaling loudly as she placed her hands on her hips and glared at her father.

She might have mounted Haldor and flown straight across the forbidden lake without further thought, but Etienne interrupted her scheming and whispered in her ear, “I believe this will be our first mission.”

“Oh, Etienne, yes. It shall.” She was beaming that her mate was willing to go on this foolish errand with her, just so her best friend could one day fly.

“Absolutely, but not for a couple of weeks. Before we fight, I want to spend several nights alone in your arms. Is that too much to ask?”

Turning bright red, she projected to him, “Shhh. Not in front of my parents.”

Lifting her chin up, he looked into her eyes and replied, “They are not fools, Sofia. Once upon a time, they were newly mated too.”

“You’re impossible.”

Rolling his eyes, he projected, ‘Fade with me.’

She didn’t even ask where they were going, but when they detoured and appeared in the library, she was confused, asking, “Why are we here?”

Stepping closer to her, Etienne replied, “Because when we finally claim each other tonight, it should be where you are most comfortable. I figured here, with your books and stories, you would be more relaxed than in my bed chambers.”

Shaking her head, she slowly wrapped her arms around his neck and gently touched his lips with hers. Pulling back, she whispered, “You never cease to amaze me.”

“Well, little one, I feel the same about you.”

While the villagers celebrated her Choosing Day, Sofia gave into all her fears and gave herself freely to Etienne. When they woke in the morning, among the pillows and books, she could feel his every emotion. She blushed when she realized his true desires, watching his fangs elongate. He was ready to pounce.

Leaning in, his teeth pierced her neck, and she let out a soft cry. Her stomach was still full of electric butterflies, chasing around the fear demons, still trying to take control of her mind.

She pushed all her anxieties away and kissed him, but before they got lost in each other, the library door slammed open, and a frenzied soldier yelled, “Princess Sofia, Princess Mia went missing in the early hours of the morning.”

“When did you discover this?”

“Just within the last few minutes.”

“Have you sent out men to search for her?” Etienne asked, pulling the sheets over them.

Keeping his eyes to the ground, the soldier replied, “No, her father insists he knows where she is going.”

Sitting up, Sofia said, “Let me guess. She’s going to the dragons.”

“That is what he believes.”

“So, why not go after her,” Sofia growled.

“Because you’re the only one who will convince her not to cross the forbidden lake alone.”

“Leave us now. We’ll meet you outside by the dragon’s pen.”

Etienne grumbled, “Well, looks like you have your first mission, little warrior.”

Grunting, Sofia didn’t bother answering as she scooped up her clothes and started to get dressed. Once she was somewhat presentable, she said, “We’ll need supplies for this journey.”

“Perhaps your parents have already taken care of that. Let’s go.”

They faded to the courtyard and found Luther and Amelia sitting with Xavier, discussing the matter at hand.

When Luther saw Sofia, he pronounced, “Sofia, mount your beast. Etienne, you too. Find Princess Mia and bring her home safely. Do not cross over the forbidden lake. You must wait for the appropriate time.”

“And when will that be?” questioned Sofia.

“You will know.”

“Fine, but if I can’t force her to return, I’ll go with her.”

Luther looked from Amelia to Etienne and remained silent, hoping they would participate in this debate. After several minutes, he simply stated, “Go! Be swift.”

Just like that, Princess Sofia was off on her first mission with Etienne.

Author Notes:

Hi Readers,

After I finished The Forgotten, The Realms of Darkness, I felt that there were several character's stories that I wanted to expand upon. So, I have been working on short stories to complement some of my favorite characters whose ARCS were not fully explored in The Forgotten. Here in The Reluctant Rider, I am exploring Olivia, Luther and Amelia's daughter and Etienne, one of the heros in The Forgotten.
