The discovery and exploitation of oil provided significant revenue but also led to increased corruption and social inequality. Political instability persisted, with frequent coups and counter-coups. In 1999, after prolonged pressure for democratization, Nigeria transitioned to civilian rule with the election of Olusegun Obasanjo as president, marking the beginning of the Fourth Republic and a renewed hope for democratic governance.
