Why Nesta Archeron Could Become Prythian’s Most Formidable Warrior
What If Nesta Archeron’s greatest legacy isn’t the power she lost but the future she could help protect?

Spoilers for Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series, especially A Court of Silver Flames, and Crescent City: House of Flame and Shadow
Nesta Archeron occupies my thoughts on a near-constant basis.
Within Sarah J. Maas's universe, she ranks among the most divisive characters. Her sharp wit, guarded nature, and stubborn streak contribute to this, yet these same traits make her development compelling to follow across her story. She is not a character seeking to remake herself; rather, she is grappling with profound grief, shame, resentment, and fragility. She harbors the fear that she does not deserve love. Across A Court of Silver Flames, she works to reconcile herself with her past.
Yet the story does not end there.
In House of Flame and Shadow, the third installment of the Crescent City series, Nesta is drawn into a broader conflict spanning multiple worlds. Her bond with Bryce Quinlan tests her loyalties, her judgment, and her trust as she strives to safeguard Prythian.
This inter-series crossover makes it clear that Nesta's story is far from finished. Could it be that her healing journey is shaping her into a pivotal guardian and leader? It is easy to envision Nesta rising to become one of Prythian's foremost warriors. This is not driven by a desire to prove herself in combat, but by having learned how to protect others while remaining true to who she is.
Given her ties to the Valkyries, her encounters with Bryce, and potential clashes with the human queens, the possibilities are numerous. These theories are my own, but they point toward some intriguing directions the story could take.
Nesta’s Anger Has a Story Behind It
By examining Nesta’s background, we can trace the path that led her to leadership.
She faced numerous hardships throughout her life. From an early age, the expectations placed on her in childhood shaped her complex feelings about love, worthiness, and approval.
Her mother most likely regarded her as the most promising means of fulfilling her own ambitions. This may have led Nesta to believe that her value depended entirely on meeting high expectations.
While this is just one interpretation, it offers a compelling explanation for why she has such a powerful need for control.
Her feelings toward her father are highly conflicted. She can feel compassion for him because of his gentle disposition, yet she also resents his inability to protect them. We frequently feel this way about the people we care about because of their shortcomings.
Her anger functions as a protective barrier. It shields her, but it also prevents her from forming the connections and receiving the support she needs.
While this does not excuse the harm she has inflicted on others, genuine character growth demands that she acknowledge the trauma she has endured and take responsibility for the pain she has caused.
The most significant positive aspect of her character development is that she is starting to confront both sides of her past.
Redemption is now within her reach, and she no longer has to remain who she is to survive.
The Valkyries Could Become Something Much Bigger
A particular highlight of A Court of Silver Flames, for me, was observing the way Nesta built her connection with Gwyneth Berdara and Emerie.
Although their histories differ greatly, the three of them have formed a bond grounded in their shared training and friendship. Nesta is beginning to discover where she belongs within this circle. She can allow herself to be vulnerable without any sense that she must conceal something.
Their genuine strength lies in their commitment to turn up each day and train as a group. This gives Nesta a secure environment in which she can genuinely develop her powers without needing to seem invulnerable.
As a result, I would be eager to see how the Valkyries evolve in future books.
They have the potential to grow from a close-knit band of warriors into the heart of an all-female force dedicated to safeguarding the vulnerable across Prythian. They could bring together women from different courts, forming a broader alliance that actively works to dismantle existing power structures and open up more opportunities for women. They can establish their own customs and pass on their expertise, leaving a lasting legacy that extends beyond their military duties.
None of these need to take place immediately. A gradual progression, marked by difficulties along the way, would prove far more rewarding.
Nesta's involvement in such a development could be remarkable. She would give them a leader whose guidance would enable them to thrive. Through their ongoing partnership, she will be continually reminded that leadership is not about control, but about empowering others to find their own strength.
House of Flame and Shadow: Nesta’s World Gets Bigger
Nesta's narrative arc progresses in a satisfying way at this point.
Bryce Quinlan reaches Prythian and discloses that a significant problem exists between the worlds. Understandably, both Nesta and Azriel remain doubtful. Given that Bryce is an unknown outsider bringing momentous news, this will clearly carry major repercussions for Prythian.
Nesta's doubt and her instinct to protect were entirely justified. Nevertheless, she is pulled into a difficult predicament that compels her to reconsider her perspective on the multiverse.
This is a standout feature of the crossover. It clearly illustrates how deeply Nesta is engaged and how her attention moves away from her past trauma, Night Court troubles, and Valkyrie allegiance toward the world-threatening conflict among the realms.
Her dynamic with Bryce further illustrates how a highly independent and guarded person can learn to extend trust in a calculated way.
Given her nature, Nesta is justified in being wary. That said, this should not drive her to complete cynicism.
Once she grasps how dire the situation with Bryce truly is, she must strike a balance between what she knows and what remains unknown to her. She must remain rational.
This illustrates Nesta's growing maturity and her development as a leader. A capable leader must weigh geopolitical consequences and recognize that at times her own world must come first.
While she does not instantly become a master negotiator or a fully realized leader, her actions in House of Flame and Shadow do help her view things differently.
Encountering threats from beyond Prythian equips her with valuable knowledge should she ever need to lead the continent in defending against such unprecedented dangers. She will need to understand how to collaborate with others and to plan ahead.
It would be worthwhile to examine how this influences her in later books:
Does she grow more wary of the outside worlds?
Is she aware that regardless of how powerful a ruler she may be, they still possess gaps in their knowledge?
In what way does collaborating with a personality as strong as Bryce influence her perspective on having steadfast female allies?
These questions hold a great deal of potential. A further essential element of her part in this crossover is the way her views on power evolve.
The Mask, The Cauldron, and the Meaning of Power
Nevertheless, the magical items hold considerable significance within her narrative.
Across Nesta's arc, we have witnessed her grappling with the burden of possessing power. Because it was imposed upon her, it became intrinsically tied to experiences of trauma. Yet her choices demonstrate that acquiring or recovering one's full power is not necessarily a hero's primary objective.
At the high point of A Court of Silver Flames, she surrendered the majority of her Cauldron-granted magic to rescue Feyre and her unborn son, Nyx. Her choice reveals that despite possessing extraordinary gifts, she recognizes the moment to prioritize her family and relinquish her powers. For Nesta, power constitutes a profound responsibility. It carries inherent dangers, yet she wields it to safeguard others.
Her path proceeds into House of Flame and Shadow, where she becomes embroiled in a broader conflict centering on the Mask and the Dread Trove artefacts. This lends the artefacts greater significance, as they now figure within a multiverse-spanning struggle.
It leaves one speculating about what lies ahead in her tale. Might she recover a portion of her magic through battles yet to come? Has her encounter with the Mask and proximity to Bryce's world altered her perception of the perils involved in wielding legendary weapons? Or will her path demand that she grow into a stronger leader without leaning on her powers?
In any case, intriguing possibilities lie ahead.
Should she regain some of her powers, that development ought to carry genuine meaning for her and bring real repercussions.
Conversely, if she never recovers her full magical capabilities, that too is compelling, since we have already witnessed that her true worth stems from her commitment, courage, affection, and relationships.
Ultimately, the question is not whether she will attain the same level of magic she formerly possessed, but whether she will continue to recognize her inner strength.
What If the Human Queens Return?
Such a loss would strike her with devastating force. To her, Cassian means far more than merely being a mate. Time and again, he broke through the walls she had built and helped her envision a hopeful future when she herself could not.
Certainly, losing him would fill her with anger, yet she would have to strive hard to keep from sinking into a destructive rage. Genuine character growth emerges when that anger is channeled into purposeful action.
Before charging into any peril, she would need to weigh carefully what was unfolding. She would have to place her trust in the Valkyries and make choices that safeguarded the broader community. She would need to weigh how deeply she wished to save Cassian against what she owed to those around her. This would not diminish the depth of her love for him; rather, it would demonstrate her ability to balance that love with her leadership responsibilities.
Though anger may grip her, this will test both her strategic mind and the strength of her allies. This could prove the definitive test of her personal growth, her Valkyrie training, and her experience across the realms. She will need to trust, to stay adaptable, and to lead rather than rely solely on her combat abilities. In the end, revealing her inner strength will be the true measure of how far she has come.
Feyre as High Queen, and Nesta as Her Most Trusted General?
One compelling avenue the story could take is Feyre ascending to the position of High Queen.
Although this remains entirely a matter of speculation, it would spark considerable debate regarding who ought to govern the court and the extent of authority each High Lord should hold. Whether a single ruler would genuinely serve the country's long-term stability.
Should Feyre assume the role of High Queen, Nesta could serve as one of her most formidable military commanders.
This would stem neither from any favoritism between them nor from an obligation to include her, but rather from her demonstrated accomplishments.
Nesta has witnessed the consequences of wielding such extensive control, has fought for her independence, and has shown she can rise above those who doubt her. Her rigorous Valkyrie training and the events of House of Flame and Shadow would allow her to draw on her personal achievements to strengthen her performance in a leadership position.
She has confronted major inter-realm crises under intense pressure, which means she could apply her strategic mind to shield Prythian from a range of threats.
Feyre could concentrate on the diplomatic dimension while Nesta focused on strategy. In this arrangement, Feyre would unite everyone while Nesta safeguarded them.
Some friction should still remain to keep the story compelling. Given their shared history, they need not see eye to eye on every matter. They would clash at times over how things ought to be run, which would lend the narrative considerable depth.
It would be rewarding to watch them move from being thrust together amid resentment and confusion to standing side by side in their roles with mutual respect.
They would no longer be confined to their current roles. Nesta would cease to be the resentful older sister, and Feyre would no longer be the sole bearer of their family's burdens. They would be two capable leaders, each with distinct strengths and clear objectives, collaborating with one another.
Nesta would make an outstanding leader if she were granted a senior position.
Cassian Would Need to Respect the Leader Nesta Becomes
Analyzing Nesta’s path forward inevitably brings Cassian into the conversation.
While their dynamic serves as the emotional core of A Court of Silver Flames, upcoming stories could meaningfully examine how their bond adapts when Nesta pursues goals beyond their romance.
Given his background in military command, Cassian recognizes the realities of leadership—including the hard decisions and unavoidable dangers involved in safeguarding others.
This perspective could allow him to support Nesta should she take charge of the Valkyries or step into a high-ranking military role.
However, supporting her means fully respecting her position.
Nesta would require the autonomy to make choices independently of Cassian. At times, her duty to her soldiers, her strategic obligations, or defensive missions would have to take precedence, even if it causes him concern.
He would have to rely on her leadership capabilities, just as she must rely on her comrades-in-arms.
Their partnership can only thrive if both remain true to themselves. Nesta can embrace Cassian’s devotion while keeping her autonomy intact, and Cassian can champion her growth without viewing her independence as a threat to their commitment.
The scenario involving Cassian's potential capture offers a compelling narrative avenue.
Such an event would test Nesta deeply. Her character evolution would shine through her reaction: rather than burying her grief or reacting recklessly out of emotion, she would balance her determination to save him with her duties as a commander.
She would need to depend on allies to secure his rescue. For someone who historically guarded herself through isolation, extending that level of trust would mark a monumental personal victory.
Nesta’s Greatest Legacy Could Be the Future She Builds
For her character arc to feel fulfilling, Nesta does not need to become High Queen, recover all of her magic, or assume command over every branch of Prythian's military.
My hope is that her story makes clear just how much more she is than the worst chapters of her life.
She ought to come to understand that she can shoulder responsibility while still treating herself with kindness. She is able to recognize the pain and sorrow she has caused and yet remain worthy of redemption. She can cherish her sisters, build profound friendships, and still look forward to a future with Cassian.
The Valkyries deserve a journey that carries real weight. I hope that Nesta's path through House of Flame and Shadow will leave a lasting mark on her. She has been cast into a conflict that has tested how she sees her home world, and she has forged an alliance with someone confronting enormous odds. This may help her grasp how to navigate new alliances.
Her future holds many possibilities, whether that means the human queens' return, deeper discovery of her own powers, or Feyre taking on a greater political role with Nesta as her trusted commander at her side.
