Mississippi Wizards

a Vocalite review

By Matthew J. FrommPublished about 11 hours ago • 1 min read

What better way to start off spooky season than a little horror book review from one of our very own!

You know those trope boards? Those ones all over booktok? I despise, no I abhor those things because if you only ever pick books like you're ordering at Chipotle, you might never pick up a book like this.

And you know what? This is a book you should pick up.

I’m not naturally inclined to pick up a horror book. I’ve never read a King novel. I’ve never seen Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street. I’d never naturally gravitate to a supernatural thriller about racism and homophobe in the Deep South.

But boy am I glad I did.

I could not, despite my better angels whispering to not read it in the dark of night, put this thing down. Emotionally vivid characters and settings brought to life by exquisite prose make this a must recommend.

On top of that, the production value is top notch. This was such an easy book to pick up and go, "one more chapter"; I ripped through 100 pages in my first sitting.

Critiques here are hard to come by--any I might issue are purely stylistic which have nothing to do with the actual quality of the narrative. For example, I don't love when characters end up having an internal dialogue conversation with themselves, but that doesn't mean its usage is bad per se--it's just not a literary device I personally love. That said, it completely works here.

If you're looking for a horror novel to celebrate the season, I implore you to pick this one up.

Who knows, maybe I am a horror fan now?
