During this recovery period books are my best friends, so sitting on the couch with a steaming mug of freshly blended tea and a book in hand I was set for the morning atleast. The book was 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone', the debut novel in the seven-part Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I loved it since childhood and still continue to do so, there are very few stories that are timeless and still interesting. No matter how many times I went through it, it never gets old.

The tantalising scent from the tea wafted through my scenes as I began reading pulling me deeper into a world of magic and wonderment. An hour went by when I closed the book and put down the now empty mug. Here's my opinion on the novel.

As you open the book you are pulled into a magical world created by Rowling, it follows a story of an orphaned boy named Harry Potter who on his eleventh birthday discovers that he is a wizard. A flurry of letters tells him that he is accepted into 'Hogwarts School of Wizardry & Witch raft'; the alma matter of his parents. And with his magical journey begins focusing on self-discovery and unveiling the mystery of his past.

A lot of themes are brilliantly incorporated into the narrative, bringing depth and layers to the story. The central theme is the classic struggle between the good and evil, as Harry learns about his parents death he must navigate the challenges of growing up while also facing the threat of Voldemort. And how the exploration of Harry's past shapes his present and future. With all this it explores the concept of destiny and the power of choice.

With the few sneak peaks into the past of the enigmatic Professor Dumbledore and the morally ambiguous Professor Snape it tells us of the complex nature of the characters, presenting both their flaws and strengths. As the story progresses it shows the development of the characters and the friendship bonds. These are important in the Main-characters journey as they provide emotional support and guidance.

Additionally, the author skillfully addresses societal issues such as prejudice and discrimination, particularly through the portrayal of the pure-blood supremacy ideology of Lord Voldemort and his followers, known as Death Eaters. This serves as a reflection of real-world issues and adds a layer of depth to the narrative. Furthermore, the world-building in the novel is exceptional, as Rowling meticulously constructs the magical realm of Hogwarts, complete with its own history, traditions, and diverse magical creatures.

There are many loop holes in the story but as it is the first of the series I expect it to be covered in the other books of the series. It is rich, captivating, compelling and immersive  filled with complex characters, thought-provoking themes and a gripping plot that sets the stage for epic adventure that unfolds in the rest of the series. It a timeless story that resonates with readers of all ages. J.K. Rowling's masterful storytelling and poignant themes have etched the novel as a beloved classic in the realm of fantasy literature.

And this my opinion about it. Can't wait for such brilliant works to come out. With all the stories that are popping out every year I expect one to be the next big thing making it's very own place in the timeless fantasy classic corner. Keeping my hope high. This me signing off! See ya! Are you fan of this series? Who is your favourite character in the first novel of the Harry Potter series? Have you read the books or just watched the movies?

We English are of course very proud of Harry Potter! But above all else, I'm happy to hear you're feeling better and enjoying a good book. I must confess, I'm not the biggest Potterhead out there, but the stories and films have touched upon my life all the same. Now, a lecturer doesn't always tell his students his age, but I read the fourth Harry Potter just after the second time I fell in love! Our hero's pains over Cho going to the ball with Cedric and not him were therefore highly resonant, I won't lie. On a related note, in the first book, Harry seeing his parents in the Mirror of Erised reduced me utterly. There's some very tender and beautiful writing throughout the series. To answer your question about the movies, I did see most of them, and felt they were best understood as a separate entity to the books. Inevitably they suffered by comparison, and it didn't help that their relatively low British budgets were pitted against such effects-extravaganzas as the Star Wars prequels and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. Ultimately, the most successful Harry Potter directors and actors were those who made the project their own, and gave it a unique or unexpected spin. Alfonso Curaon's take on the third film was a much-needed change of style and was for the most part successful, whilst Shirley Henderson and Ralph Fiennes stand out for interpreting their respective characters in ways not directly suggested by J K Rowling's text. You seem to have started me thinking on Potter themes this morning! Loved your review. Keep up with the reading, it's good medicine!

  • I'm a hugeeeee Potterhead! I've read each book 7 times and watched the movies countless times!
