If you follow the black natural hair community at all, or are yourself a part of the natural hair community, than you know that dreadlocks are trending.

One scroll on Instagram reels and you’ll find endless re-twist videos, crocheting and instant locking methods, and palm-rolling videos galore.

While these hairstylists are indeed creative, is it all hype? I’m here to confidently recommend locs, especially if your already have natural hair. Whether you’re confused about why everyone is suddenly “locking up” or are considering rocking some starter locs and beginning your loc journey. Here are 5 reasons why you so go ahead and loc your hair.

1) They are Beautiful

Of course this was going to be at the top of the list! Locs are beautiful! Whether they are tiny like micro locs, thick, eat-length,long, or dyed. All of the styles instantly create a regal, majestic, and elegant look that captures the beauty of black hair.

2) Easy Maintenance

This is the main reason why most natural hair queens make the choice to loc up…they’re easy to maintain. I’ve personally had my locs for almost two years; I chose to loc up my back length, 3C texture hair after I found out I was pregnant with my second child. I’d barely had enough time to do my hair with my four year old so I knew I was going to need something more low-maintenance. I’m so happy I made the choice!

In the beginning stages is probably when the most maintenance occurs. Starter locs are the first stage of locking your hair. For some hair types, trying to maintain the soft coils requires more frequent re-twisting and less washing. After the starter phase, daily maintaining of your locs becomes as simple as spraying them with rose water, applying your favorite oil to moisturize, doing your edges and booking a re-twist with your stylist every 4-6 weeks.

3) Endless Styles

Something that deterred me from locking my hair for so long was the fear of never doing certain hairstyles again. I loved rocking my bouncy curls and occasionally getting my hair straightened out and was fearful of missing out. However, after doing a quick search on YouTube, I found endless unique hairstyles for locs and hairstyles that re-create loose hairstyles.

My personal favorite style is curls! What can I say, I still love my bouncy curls and I still get to have them with my locs.

Also, if you ever find yourself missing straight hair, you can braid down your locs and wear a wig! I just tried this last month and I loved it! I got to switch it up, enjoy straight hair for a bit and keep my beautiful locs.

4) Represents the Culture

As we all know, the natural hair movement is still a fairly new phenomenon that came to be because of hundreds of years of oppression of black hair. There were laws that prevented black women from even showing their hair in public.

The loc movement represents a returning to our roots through our hair. We where the styles of our ancestors in celebration of our culture. A culture that has survived years of hate and ridicule.

5) The Growth will Shock You!

If you’ve struggled with hair growth, due to excessive protective styles, hair weaves, product buildup, genetics or maybe a combination of these than you might want to give locs a try. All of my clients and friends who started their loc journey and committed to the process all were shocked at the consistent results.

Conclusion

To conclude this ode to locs I just want to highly recommend working with a licensed professional to help you along your loc journey. There’s lots of misinformation out there, so always take care of your hair and make sure it’s healthy above everything. Get you a stylist with growing hands and enjoy the journey.

Peace and love ❤️🧘🏾‍♀️
