Baldness or hair loss is a problem that affects both the male and female sexes across the globe. It can be a slow process or an acute one, and might involve only the scalp or the whole body. It is normal for a person to shed between 50 to 100 hairs per day, but if one notices that he or she is losing more than this, or sees that some areas of the scalp are becoming bald, then it is a cause for concern. Knowing the causes of hair loss is the first thing that one needs to do in order to tackle the problem.

In this article the author discusses the different causes of hair loss and gives advice on how this problem could be solved.

The Hair Growth Cycle and Hair Loss:

Hair goes through a natural growth cycle consisting of three phases:Hair goes through a natural growth cycle consisting of three phases:

Anagen: The anagen phase that can last between 2-7 years, during which hair follicles are involved in producing new hair.

Catagen: A phase of 2-4 weeks that is between the anagen phase and the telogen phase, during which the hair growth rate decreases and the follicle separates from the blood supply.

Telogen: The telogen phase lasts for 3 months, during which the hair finally sheds off and new hair is formed in the anagen phase.

Hair loss is a condition whereby the normal hair growth cycle is interfered with in that either more hairs go to the telogen phase or the anagen phase is shortened.

Unveiling the Causes:

Hair loss can be attributed to various factors, some more controllable than others: Hair loss can be attributed to various factors, some more controllable than others:

Heredity: Some of the causes include Androgenetic Alopecia, which is also referred to as male or female pattern baldness. Hair follicle sensitivity is genetically pre-determined to hormones such as testosterone and this leads to a gradual hair thinning.

Hormonal Changes: Estrogen, progesterone, and androgen are hormones that play a role in the hair growth cycle and their changes may contribute to hair loss. This is typical in pregnancy, childbirth, during menopause, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Medical Conditions: Some diseases such as thyroid diseases, ringworm, diseases that affect the immune system like Alopecia Areata, and diseases that involve hair pulling such as Trichotillomania also lead to hair loss. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are other treatments that cause hair loss that may be either temporary or permanent.

Stress: Stress that is physical or emotional can lead to telogen effluvium, a form of hair loss that is temporary as hair follicles are placed in the resting phase.

Nutrient Deficiencies: Iron, protein, biotin, and zinc are some of the nutrients that are known to affect hair growth when in short supply. These deficits may stem from a restricted diet, problems with nutrient absorption, or the use of certain drugs.

Hairstyles and Hair Care Practices:** Styles that pull hair back tightly such as braids, corn rows or ponytails that apply pressure on the hair roots are known to cause a condition called traction alopecia. Most of the chemical processes such as perming, bleaching or straightening are likely to harm the hair and cause breakage.

Addressing Hair Loss:

Hair loss treatment is therefore categorized depending on the cause of the problem. Here are some potential solutions: Here are some potential solutions:

Medications:** Rogaine is an over the counter medication that is applied on the scalp to help promote hair regrowth in cases of androgenetic Alopecia. Propecia is a drug that is used to treat male pattern baldness and is under the brand name finasteride.

Hair Transplant Surgery:** This surgical procedure entails moving hair follicles from a region of the head that has a good growth of hair and implanting them in a region that has poor hair growth.

Laser Therapy: Low-level laser therapy is a relatively new technique that may help hair regrowth by enhancing blood flow to the hair follicles.

Lifestyle Changes: Stress, diet, and hair treatment are some of the factors that can affect hair health; therefore, it is crucial to take care of these aspects of life.

Concealing Techniques: Cosmetically, wigs, hair pieces or certain hairstyles can be used to cover up hair loss.

Seeking Professional Help:

It is recommended that one seek the services of a dermatologist to get to know the cause of hair loss and the most appropriate treatment plan. A dermatologist can examine the patient physically, take blood samples, and take a sample of the scalp to determine the cause. This means that when a specific disease is detected at an early stage and treated, the patient is likely to benefit from the treatment.

Living with Hair Loss:

Baldness is a problem that can be psychologically disturbing to the affected individuals and can lead to poor self-image. Nevertheless, it is crucial to keep in mind that you are not the only one who experiences such feelings. There are many effective treatments available and it can be helpful to join a support group to get connected with others who have gone through similar situations.

Though some types of hair loss are irreversible, there are many that can be cured. It is important to consider the causes of hair loss and look for ways to address the problem in order to regain control over the hair condition.
