The megachurch preacher credits his marriage success to the ‘Billy Graham Rule.’

When I was 17, I spent some time with my uncle. He lived in Victoria, Texas. He was the associate pastor of a church, Faith Christian Church. The head pastor was Jim Graff. His wife was Joel Osteen’s sister, Tamara.

Since my uncle was close friends with Jim, I got an inside look at the Osteens. At the time, Joel was barely over 20 and newly married to his wife, and nothing like the man you see in his videos and sermons. I have nothing but great things to say about Tamara and her parents. They were all very nice and appeared genuine.

Joel Osteen is a name most of us know well. Some love him and others despise him. Celebrities such as Mariah Carey and Kanye West regularly attend his church.

He is the senior pastor at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, a position previously occupied by his father John. Being that Joel is a celebrity of some sort, it’s easy to assume you know him. But none of us knows much about him, other than what he allows us to see.

Billy Graham Marriage Rule

I have heard about this rule since I was a teenager. It simply means he will never put him in the situation to be alone with a woman that isn’t his wife, ever. If there isn’t an option to have another man present, he removes himself from the room.

Former Vice President Mike Pence had a similar rule while serving in the White House. He refused to dine with a woman who wasn’t his wife, even after being teased about it by Donald Trump.

Joel believes that is the best way to avoid rumors of infidelity. He mentioned that this rule helps his wife trust him when they aren’t together. Apparently, his dad, John, had the same rule with his mother, and it worked out well.

Victoria’s Hard Rule

Joel expects Victoria to look her best at all times. Osteen made a few backhanded comments about women who don’t wear makeup or take care of themselves. He believes housewives should still get prettied up every day, so when their husbands get home from working, they see their wife at her best.

"Wives, don’t look good for everybody else. Look good for your husband, too.”

Victoria agreed with her husband, and suggested she strives to always look her best at home, waking up early to shower, do her hair and apply makeup at least 30 minutes before Joel wakes up. By the time Joel gets up, his wife looks flawless, dressed and ready to tackle the day, with a cup of coffee in hand for him.

“I respect him. I honor him. You know, I think that’s what it takes,” Victoria said about her husband.

According to The Things, Joel offered advice to a woman upset that her husband was cheating on her. He told her not to leave him, but to go to Victoria’s Secret to buy something ‘sexy’ to attract him. Apparently, it was HER fault her husband strayed.

Even if these rules seem strange to use, it works for them. She seems genuinely in love with her husband after being married over 30 years.

“When you can laugh and you can have joy, that’s very healthy. Victoria is easy going. She’s very spontaneous and fun. I can hear her laughter all through the house. It sets the tone for the house,” Joel explained. “We don’t always agree with each other, but we make the decision that we want to treat each other with respect.”
