If you have specific needs when it comes to your hair, you know how hard it can be to find affordable hair care products. What if you could take care of your hair and save money at the same time? You can do that by making your own hair care products. In this article, I’ll share some recipes for hair care products you can make at home with ingredients you can buy at the grocery store or on Amazon.

Why make your own hair care products?

As I mentioned earlier, depending on what kind of hair you have, hair care products can be expensive. Making your own hair care products might take a little preparation time, but it’s cheaper in the long run to make your own than to buy them somewhere.

Rosemary Peppermint Shampoo

What it does

Rosemary peppermint shampoo helps reduce stress on the scalp, and provides all the essential nutrients that the scalp and hair need.

Ingredients:

  • 16 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • ½ cup of castile soap
  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • ½ cup of distilled or filtered water

Directions:

  1. Get a container with a flip-top lid and fill it with castile soap.
  2. Add the peppermint and rosemary essential oils
  3. Add the filtered water

How to use it:

  1. Add a few squirts of rosemary peppermint shampoo to your hair
  2. Shampoo thoroughly and rinse.

Rosemary Hair Pomade

What it does:

This pomade adds important nutrients and antioxidants to your hair, which strengthens and conditions it. It works on all hair types.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of shea butter
  • 1 cup of grated beeswax or beeswax pastille
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • 4 small tins or jars
  • Rosemary essential oil

Directions:

  1. Pour the ingredients into a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, use a pot filled halfway with water. Place a stainless steel or glass bowl inside it.
  2. Raise the temperature on the water to a gentle simmer.
  3. Let the shea butter, coconut oil, wax, and honey melt.
  4. Once it’s melted, whisk the mixture thoroughly
  5. Add 4 to 5 drops of essential oil to the contents of the bowl and stir thoroughly.
  6. Gently pour it into clean tins or jars.
  7. Allow it to cool completely before transferring the containers.
  8. Place the lids on them once they’ve cooled fully.

Foaming Honey Cleanser

What it does:

This cleanser works great for dandruff and itchy scalp treatment. If you have coarse, thick, frizzy, or curly hair, you shouldn’t use it because it’s difficult to get the honey out after cleansing these hair conditions or types.

Ingredients:

  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 3 tablespoons of water
  • 1 teaspoon of Castile soap
  • 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of melted coconut oil
  • 4 ounces of aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Directions:

  1. Mix the ingredients in a bottle
  2. Shake the bottle thoroughly before you use it.

How to use it:

  1. Squirt a small amount of it on your scalp
  2. Rinse thoroughly

Baking Soda Shampoo

This shampoo is great for getting rid of dirt and stains. It gets rid of buildups, including mousse, hairspray, conditioner, and gel. However, if you use it too much, it can dehydrate the scalp and hair shaft. As a rule of thumb, use this only once or twice per month.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ teaspoons of baking soda
  • ½ cup of water
  • six ounce plastic bottle

Directions:

  1. Mix warm water and baking soda.
  2. Place the mixture into the plastic bottle
  3. Shake thoroughly before applying.

How to use it:

  1. Apply small amounts of baking soda shampoo to your scalp
  2. Massage thoroughly, reaching the end of the hair shaft.

Mayonnaise Conditioner

What it does:

Mayonnaise protects hair from damage and also repairs the cuticle. The high protein concentration keeps your hair healthy and strong. This is the easiest of all these recipes because it doesn't require any extra preparation.

Ingredients:

  • Mayonnaise (really, that’s it!)

Directions:

  1. Apply a handful of mayonnaise to dry hair and cover it with a shower cap.
  2. Let it sit for 20 minutes before removing the cap.
  3. Rinse before shampooing your hair.

These are just a few recipes you can make to help your hair look and feel its best. There are many others. To find other DIY natural hair care recipes, search for DIY natural hair care recipes for your specific hair type and see what you find. I’m sure you’ll find something that works for you.
