Leo Season has BEGUN! I have decided to take a different approach to my Mooncare series here and I hope this is just as entertaining. Videos on skincare, haircare and other products from The Body Shop At Home can still be viewed at my kofi.com and always on my YouTube Channel. Please 'heart', share, and thank-you for taking the time to read!

This Friday on July 23, 2021 our Moon will be 100% illuminated and it will be transiting the sign of Capricorn. Our Sun transits through Capricorn between December 22 until January 19. The Winter Solstice falls on December 21-22. Winter Solstice marks the period that our Sun has reached the lowest point in the sky and this is our shortest day of the year. It then begins the climb back up and our days begin to grow longer.

Capricorn is one of my favorite astrological signs due to the historic nature of it's symbolism in our zodiac. Originating from the consellation Capricornus, the horned goat, it is our 10th astrology sign. You can recognize Capricorn, known as the 'Builder-sign' of the Zodiac, by its oddly positioned crescent moon shape. It almost resembles an outstretched bow amongst the stars.

What is Capricorn?

Capricorn represents two types of goat: the Mountain-goat and the mythological Sea-goat. There is such a huge correlation of water representation by Capricorn and the Moon, it bears some explanation in regards to Capricorn Full Moon energy! The full moon phase also transits through Aquarius on July 24. This happens our moon often spends 2 or 3 days in a phase before transiting the next sign.

The Mountain-goat is a naturally sturdy, and steadfast climber like our Sun. The melting snow of winter causes rain and floods, bringing an end to the Winter season. Against all odds, the climbing Mountain-goat keeps going until the achievement is reached. With the longer days of Spring, the ground warms. Earth has new growth and fresh beginnings!

The tail of the mythological Sea-goat represents the ease of moving swiftly through water. The Sea-goat has many different origins. It is a great representation for the constellation since they have the head of a goat and body of a fish, and live near shorelines. This shoreline current depends on the tide, and the terrain can be difficult. I guess this is why we have no evidence of them and we don't see them anymore...they must have become extinct once they evolved as land animals! Whichever tale (or tail!) you care for, the Sea-goat swims steady and assuredly, despite any difficulty.

A Sea-goat mother tended to the infant Zeus while he was an infant and hidden on the island of Crete. In some myths, a Sea-goat by the name Pan (who was really a satyr), who has the head of a human on a goat-like body, helped Zeus defeat his father, Cronus. You may well remember reading about the war of the titans that ended in an epic, mythological battle. Which is ironic considering Zeus' father was supposed to have created the first Sea-goat.

Capricorn (and Aquarius!) is ruled by Saturn

In Roman mythology, Saturn is the god of agriculture, civilization and social order. Saturn represents traditions and lessons we learn from discipline, patience, responsibilities, and all the obligations that come with old age. This is perfect for the fall and winter! Spring is the time to plant and Fall is the time to harvest. We store what will be needed to survive for the coming cold months. Winter Solstice is the time for a traditional celebration. We share in celebrating for having made it through a dark, cold season. We learn patience and discipline, so we can indulge in the bounty of all our hard work. So long as we remember how we got it!

Planetary Chart for July 23, 2021

As the tenth sign of the zodiac, Capricorn is also governed by the Tenth House, which represents Honor. The Tenth House in Astrology is also thought of as the 'The Shaping Parent' or 'House of the Father'. Capricorn keeps company with the other signs that have the feminine energy of Earth, like Taurus and Virgo, so there is naturally a tug-of-war going on with any masculine energy that transit these signs. However, the male-goat figure is all about ambition, hard-work, and commitment.

Retrograde motion (R next to the corresponding planet) means it is the time to turn inwards and reflect. Some things started before the slow down motion began, may not fully come to a realization until that planet stations direct. Retrograde motions of planets seem to go backwards because they appear to slow down to us here on Earth as we watch. Station direct is when the motion of the planet begins to speed ahead and move along it's normal pace.

Saturn tends to test limits and restrictions of order, using it's push-pull magnetism, to shape and mold. Capricorn has the perseverance to over-come the most challenging obstacles. The plans will be made and the other signs will do their best to achieve the desired results.

Capricorn Full Moon is the best phase to look your life plans over using the illumination from the full moon as a spotlight to see! As always, this moon is also the best for moisturizing facials and keeping your skin (and body!) hydrated. Get out and talk to people face-to-face. The extroverted energy helps us see a bit better when it comes to opportunities we may otherwise miss. HONESTLY!

Aquarius Full Moon on July 24

Who knows what collaborative and visionary Aquarius is doing with Capricorn Full Moon information? Since this sign has a masculine energy and is ruled by a neutral planet, I will refer to Aquarius as SHE. Aquarius has the life-giving waters for all the other signs, after all. Just like the Moon, she is a nurturing mother in nature. Aquarius is also ruled by Uranus, that likes to be a creative problem-solver. With Saturn retrograde in her sign right now, I bet her progressive thought process is insightful and creative in the coming years!

The very common theme during this Capricorn/Aquarius Full Moon is kind of obvious, don't you think? We are in the middle of one of the hottest Summers on record and it's been a rough one so far!

  • Use your sunscreens
  • Stay hydrated to help prevent dehydration
  • Keep strong connections with your loved ones

Use what you gained from this for the next Capricorn Moon phases coming in 2022! Our last new moon in Capricorn was at the beginning of this year during January. At that time, we should have been making plans, setting goals and also setting our intentions in regards to work and what we hoped to gain. Either Capricorn moon is a great time to show us how to share our 'bounty' so-to-speak, protect it from 'predators' and ways we should always be building our connections to reach our goals. When you look back, does this Full Moon show you where improvements were needed?

We have two Aquarius Full Moon's in a row coming. We already had an Aquarius New Moon on February 11 2021. I expect the energy from these two Full Moon's will reveal much to be learned!

Leo, the lion

Leo is one of the few constellations in our zodiac that resembles it's namesake. Found between the crab, Cancer, and Virgo the maiden, it is one of the 12 adventures taken on by Hercules as penance for killing his family. According to Greek myth, Hercules was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman named Alcmene, the grand-daughter of Perseus. It seems good ole Zeus didn't just enjoy the arms of innocent maidens but married women, too. It's not a wonder that his wife, Hera, was known for her jealousy. According to Greek mythology, Hercules was a fraternal twin, as were the Gemini twins, Castor and Pollux.

The goddess Hera, who was both sister and wife of Zeus, used Hercules step-mother to drive him insane. She had already failed numerous attempts on is life since his birth, if you recall the Disney movie. Hercules went into a blind rage and killed many family members, including his six sons. When his head cleared, you can imagine he was mortified and sought atonement. As punishment, a king sent him to complete 12 labors, known as his 12 adventures. One was to kill the Nemean lion (in Nemea) that was rumored to be unkillable and had been terrorizing locals near it's cave. Men would spot a beautiful woman and follow her, only for her to transform into a lion and maul them to death. Probably another of Hera's wicked attempts at revenge towards men who cheated on their wives. Or maybe just a maiden like Medusa?

Hercules arrived to find that his arrows could not pierce the golden fur. So he blocked off the entrance to the lion cave and after strangling it, he clubbed it to death. Hercules wore Leo's fur as a coat and it was also protection from further attempts Hera would make on his life. I think it adds insult to injury that because Leo's skin was too tough for a sword, Hercules decided to use the lions own claws in order to skin it for his stylish fur coat. Ironic that his name means 'Glory of Hera'.

Leo is ruled by the Sun and because all the other planets revolve around the star, Leo enjoys being the center of attention too. These are definitely the social butterflies of the zodiac! Leo's entertain and enjoy being entertained. These tend to be strong, stable, and loving people who tend to give, not receive. Fire sign energy can be either destructive or cleansing. Leo tempers can flare suddenly depending on their mood. They can be sullen only to explode when pushed too far. But usually Leo has a great deal of self-control and their sign is represented by the heart...no matter what happens, they will endure. They do have a great deal of passion for home and their kids, so they are great protectors and providers that live up to their namesake.

Summer Season is perfect for the Leo! All the colors that represent love, summer, and celebrating life make up the season. Wearing yellows, golds, and oranges to draw in the solar energy symbolize fire and this can be spiritually cleansing for us non-Leos! Meditate under the warm intensity of the sun to energize and gain a deeper connection with nature.

Honoring Leo with a healthy hair care routine

In honor of Leo Season, let's talk HAIR. Lions are known for their brilliant manes and Hercules himself wore a lion fur coat! Over the course of the pandemic, I have seen horror tik-toks and shared videos on other media sites of people shaving their heads, removing very old braids...and let us NOT forget the woman who used Gorilla Glue on her hair!

I can say I finally used a hair dye after just over a year on my own hair. Not using a hair straightener gave my hair even more of a break. I found a nice vegan dye from Revlon, but Arctic Fox has an array of colors from the rainbow and they are all vegan as well. With life getting somewhat back to normal, let me ask you, how do you take care of YOUR hair?

Hair care tips:

  1. Brushing your hair from root to tip intentionally will help to dislodge debris like skin, sweat, and product. This rinses out better when you shampoo. The Body Shop At Home has bamboo brushes and combs!
  2. Shampoo should be used on your scalp. That's why all the bottles specify DIME-SIZE. We all need to get build-up of skin and sweat off scalp pores. Even those who choose the Boho dreadlocks use a specific wash, rinse and way to moisturize locks to keep hair clean and healthy. Wearing hair gel, hair spray, or leave-in conditioners causes a ton of build up. Why not try a hair & scalp scrub? Once a week can help refreshen your scalp. It needs to breathe too!
  3. Conditioner is usually applied to the ENDS of hair. Split ends can go up the root of hair into the follicle and actually prevent hair growth! Hey, I was told this news about split ends a few years ago by a great hair stylist near me but now you know, too.
  4. Use the correct product for your hair type. I made the mistake in my early 20s of using a hot oil treatment that was definitely NOT for me! I looked like a had dipped my head in a pot of oil, I was mortified. This took a little over a week to completely get off my hair. Needless to say, I never used that one again. Hair masks and hot oil treatments should only be used once a week anyway or even once a month, depending on need.
  5. Drying hair with a t-shirt is actually better than using a towel. I always squeeze out extra water, maybe put a bit of moisturizer in ends (Olive Oil, Argan Oil, Pantene conditioner) and then wrap it in a towel. An old t-shirt is actually gentler on hair.
  6. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair. Wet hair actually breaks pretty easily. This is usually when products that protect against heat should go on if you blow-dry.
  7. Allowing hair to air-dry is going to be better. Blowing out hair is pretty drying and dehydrates the hair you just infused with moisture. A blow-dryer is counterproductive...even though it looks fabulous when it's done!
  8. Trim ends on a regular basis to battle splitting. It depends on how fast or slow your hair grows. Every six weeks or once a month? Split ends should be trimmed as soon as they appear.

Whatever you do, please don't use products from Home Depot in your mane for ANYTHING. In my personal opinion, if you can't eat it, or cook with it, it probably shouldn't be on your skin OR in your hair! There are some vegan hair dyes out there. If bad judgement occurs, don't panic. Hair grows back. Just get to a professional stylist...quick!
