4 Tips for Improving Your Skincare Routine

Discover Your Beautiful, Replenished Skin

While it seems to be the focus, skincare is more than just treating blemishes! It’s about creating a healthy routine for your skin. There are many different skin issues that people deal with every day. No matter your circumstances, a positive routine will help give you a clear complexion, and leave you with beautiful, healthy skin.

While different skin types often require different care, there are some features that nearly all skin-types have in common.

Consistency Is Key

Just like with any routine, consistency is the main factor to success. It may sound obvious, but how many of us come home from a late night, and go to bed with our makeup on? Think of your skincare routine much like other health obligations, such as taking medication or dieting. Set a reminder on your phone or create a to-do list. A fun reminder such as a sticky note on your mirror to “love your face” is a great reminder to not only follow your daily skincare routine, but appreciate yourself and practice self-care. Besides, experts say it takes a little more than two months on average to develop a habit, so soon enough, this act of skincare will become second nature to you! While you’re getting better skin, you’re also teaching yourself to be disciplined in looking after your own health.

Healthy Makeup Choices

If you’ve ever walked down a makeup aisle, you’ve likely seen the words "hydrating," "healthy," and "dermatologist approved." But what really is healthy makeup? Is there even such a thing? It is important to check the ingredients in your makeup and expiration dates. Did you know that mascara expires after about three months? Liquid foundation can last up to a year. While not all states require companies to list the expiration date on makeup, it is important to keep track of how long you’ve had a product. Expired makeup is known to cause skin irritation, and more frequent breakouts.

Ingredients to avoid include added fragrances and parabens, whereas natural ingredients and sunscreen options are ideal.

Supplement Options

Sometimes the basics just aren’t cutting it, and you need some additional help; that’s where supplements such as vitamins, essential oils, and other options come in handy. For example, if you have blemishes, you put a drop of witch hazel to reduce skin irritations. Adding a drop of copaiba essential oil to facial moisturizer helps skin stay clear, and prevents the frequency of blemishes. If you want to relax and cleanse your skin, try applying bergamot essential oil to your skin while in the shower, then inhale the calming aroma while enjoying its skin-purifying benefits.

Take Care of Your Body

You’re probably tired of hearing it, but it’s true: Water is probably the best “toner” you can get. Drinking more water has been known to reduce pore sizes and frequency of blemishes. Not only are you helping your pores and reducing any acne, but it’s great for your body as a whole. By drinking 60 to 80 ounces of water each day, you’ll notice clearer skin, increased energy, and more brain power throughout your day. Staying hydrated has many benefits, and there are some great apps to track your water intake that will help keep you on track!

Also, make sure you’re properly applying at least an SPF 30 sunscreen. For those more sensitive to the sun, make use of a parasol and wear a hat.

Remember, skincare is just as important as other health concerns. Avoiding the sun, wearing the proper sunscreen, and following a healthy routine is beneficial for both your skin and your overall well-being. And who knows, maybe you’ll have a natural glow that even contouring can’t obtain!
