"Forgiveness is not a one-time act, it is a constant attitude." - Martin Luther King Jr.

Emma sat in her living room and looked at the wall in silence. She couldn't stop thinking about the hurt and resentment she had experienced in the past. Someone she had loved and trusted had terribly and horribly harmed her. She was furious, yet she couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was wrong.

She was sitting there, deep in concentration, when a memory suddenly flashed back to her. It was a long-ago chat she had with her grandmother. Emma's grandmother said something when she was unhappy about something - she couldn't even recall what - and it has stuck with her ever since." Emma could feel her sadness and resentment growing as they talked. She desired to lash out and harm him in retaliation for his treatment of her. She paused, though, because of something about the way he was staring at her.

"I'm sorry for everything, he murmured quietly. I apologize for my error; I am aware of it."

A swell of feelings washed through Emma. Anger, hurt, despair, and even forgiveness. She understood then that forgiving someone was a habit rather than a one-time deed. She would have to decide every day whether or not to let go of the anguish and go on. While it is necessary, forgiveness is difficult, as her grandmother had once remarked. You will ultimately suffer if you continue to harbor hatred and bitterness. You are set free by forgiveness."

Emma shook her head and ignored the incident. She wasn't yet prepared to accept forgiveness. Yet as the days went by and the hurt and rage inside of Emma put a lot of effort into developing a sense of forgiveness in her heart during the ensuing weeks. It wasn't simple, and there were times when she nearly succumbed to her hurt and rage. But she kept telling herself that she had the power to choose to forgive and that in doing so, she was freeing herself.

As Emma uttered the lines that had become her mantra, she felt a sense of peace wash over her. It was as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and she could finally breathe again.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, feeling the tension in her body slowly melting away. For a moment, she simply sat there, savoring the feeling of inner tranquility that had eluded her for so long.

As she opened her eyes, she felt a sense of gratitude in her heart. Gratitude for the journey she had been on, and for the people who had helped her along the way. Gratitude for the lessons she had learned, and for the person she was becoming.

And most of all, gratitude for the power of forgiveness. It had been a difficult path, filled with ups and downs, but Emma knew that it was worth it. By choosing to let go of the hurt and pain, she had been able to embrace a sense of serenity and freedom that she had never known before.

As she sat there, lost in thought, Emma knew that forgiveness was not a one-time act, but a constant attitude. It was something she would have to choose every day, a choice to let go of the past and embrace the present. But she also knew that it was a choice she was willing to make, no matter how difficult it might be.

And so, with a deep sense of gratitude and peace in her heart, Emma whispered the words that had become her mantra.

"I choose to let go, and I forgive you," she said, feeling the weight of the past slipping away. "And I choose to move forward, with a heart full of love and compassion."
