The Dream's Dream

Introduction

I'm not sure what kicked this off, I think it was that someone played "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac, an dof course "Rumours" also features the song "Dreams". Then I remembered "The Dream's Dream" from Television's "Adventure which also reminded me of “A Dream Within a Dream” an 1849 poem by Edgar Allan Poe.

So here are a few songs, the criteria being that they are great songs and contain the word "Dream" in the title.

There's a lot I will miss out, and I think "Dream On" by Aerosmith is turgid, so that's why that is not included.

I hope you can listen to the ones you want, as YouTube's licensing can be a bit arbitrary, but at least it's not Spotify.

We'll start off with the Fleetwood Mac song.

Fleetwood Mac - "Dreams" from "Rumours"

When Stevie Nicks and Linsay Buckingham were recruited by the band, they got a stellar talent and a musical genius. This album was made when the band were in a really bad place, relationship-wise, but it made them a fortune and still sounds great today, although my favourite Mac album is "Tusk".

Gary Wright - "Dream Weaver" from "The Dream Weaver"

I knew Gary Wright from Spooky Tooth, and I think that it was the electronics that made me buy this. It is four minutes of wonderful musical magic and still sounds brilliant fifty years on.

Horslips - "The Morrigan's Dream" from "The Táin"

I loved Horslips from the first time I heard them and loved their albums that addressed Celtic mythology, and when I bought "The Book Of Invasions" it was the only record on my turntable for two weeks.

This is a gorgeous instrumental that makes you feel that something is coming, but it never does. Still a great piece.

Gabrielle - "Dreams" from "Find Your Way"

I don't know much about Gabrielle, but this is an excellent song that has always stuck with me. I suppose it is an example of my eclectic taste in music.

Cheap Trick - "Dream Police" title track

I always thought that Cheap Trick looked hilarious, two pairs with completely different looks, nerds and cool (watch the video). Then I heard their music. Cue Cheap Trick albums and singles in my collection.

Heart - "Dreamboat Annie" Title Track

This is a nice song with a country/folk feel. Not the heaviest Heart song, but it is very pleasant, and the word "dream" is part of "Dreamboat".

David Bowie - "An Occasional Dream" from "Space Oddity"

A gentle piece from Bowie, although there are parts where you feel it drifting into darkness. The album is sometimes just called "David Bowie".

Nazareth - "Dream On" from "2XS"

I love the sound of Nazareth, Manny Charlton's guitar and Dan McCafferty's voice and saw them twice at Preston Guildhall. This is a song I didn't know from their 1982 album, and it is magnificent.

You need to give this some of your time.

Television - "The Dream's Dream" from "Adventure"

I always find songs by Television slightly different from most other music. It is like they are sculpting with the guitar lines and sounds. There don't seem to be any chords in their songs, just defined notes and lines, and that makes them stand out so much.
