Taller in More Ways

The Soul Sound of the Sugababes

The fourth album by the Sugababes had the band working with top producers like Dallas Austin and Xenomania. Like they did with their other albums, the girls split writing credits and shared vocal parts in the song. They’re at the height of their career after bringing out three iconic albums. This album is a treat for pop music fans. I remember when Push The Button first came out, and it was stuck in my head for days. Many pop bands are lucky to release more than two albums, let alone four in their first run.

Taller In More Ways is an album that hits on a personal level. It recognises the height of the Sugababes fame. It is the first of two albums to top the UK album charts and features one of their biggest singles, the synth perfection that is known as Push the Button that features the iconic music video were the girls seduce guys in a funky looking elevator. To this day Push The Button still gets a lot of air play and became a staple in concerts.

One of my favourite singles from the album is Ugly. It touched me because it felt like it was a song for me. As somebody who struggled with their image and had been bullied. Ugly is meaningful and will always hold a sense of relevance in society.

It was a bizarre choice to have Follow Me Home as a single with Amelle. I get this feeling that they were trying so hard to make Amelle a Mutya 2.0. Follow Me Home was a personal song that Mutya wrote for her daughter, Tahlia who was still a baby. It made no sense and of course, the public didn't get it either and it flopped. It annoys me that Spotify dosen’t have the original version with Mutya. Follow Me Home is a nice song, that didn’t get treated with the respect that it deserved.

Mutya and Keisha have always been credited to having great vocals. Heidi’s got the reputation of being the weakest singer of the group, but on a lot of these tracks, she sounds great. There’s a lot of speculation that Keisha and Mutya hate Heidi because of the way the band ended. I’ve heard Keisha and Mutya say nothing but good things about Heidi. I watched one of their Q&A’s on Instagram where they both said they have nothing but love for her. This was the last album the three of them recorded together as this line-up. I really like Heidi’s performance in the middle eight of Ace Reject.

Taller In More Ways is a wonderful record. It's got some cool tracks on it. I didn't think much to the Obsession cover now, but I really like the ballads "Follow Me Home" and "2 Hearts". I think the production on this album is really on par with some of the best stuff.

I kinda feel sad at the same time when I listen to this album cause it's the last one Mutya was in and I think the dynamic between Mutya and Keisha is amazing because they sing so well together and you can tell that they're the best of friends. They're like Beyonce and Kelly from Destiny's Child being the best of friends and are like practically family so when they sing together it's amazing. Mutya and Keisha have the same relationship.

Taller in More Ways was rereleased after Mutya’s departure with Amelle re-recording Mutya’s parts in Gotta Be You, Red Dress and Follow Me Home. Along with a new track, Now You’re Gone.

I think this stands as one of the best albums in their career and highlights the band at the height of their popularity. I think this is a great pop album that is full of funky pop and it’s really summery.
