The Shirehorses Album

Introduction

The songs of the Shire Horses are rewrites of chart hits filled with swearing and innuendo and so are not for children (though I was using profanity before I was ten).

Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley were once members of The Fall and you can read about that band below.

They had a show on BBC Six Music as Mark and Lard but then went their separate ways. Radcliffe pairing with the writer and DJ Stuart Maconie. Their BBC links are below.

They formed a band called the Shire Horses who playfully plagiarised chart hits and famous songs to, in my opinion, comedic if schoolboy-level effect. A spin-off from this was Fat Harry White, a funny sideswipe at the Walrus of Love, Barry White.

So here is the playlist and hopefully, you will find this funny rather than offensive. I love them. Some of the references may be a little too English for the rest of the world but I think everyone will be intelligent enough to laugh at them.

"A Roll With It" from "Our Kid Eh"

The Shirehorses as Po-Fasis with Mark Radcliffe explaining how Oasis ripped them off for "Roll With It". This song is about getting a takeaway meal. See what you think.

"Why Is It Always Dairylea" from "Our Kid Eh"

Taking on "Why Does It Always Rain On Me" by Travis, they were joined by Travis for this BBC Radio session about the problems of the cheese supplied to band riders. And yes there is a little innuendo.

"Fingering The Keyboard Of Love" by Fat Harry White from "Hmmm Baby"

This is just four minutes of innuendo but very funny, but no rude words at all. It is amazing how much can be insinuated without any rude words.

"Bellow" from "Our Kid Eh"

Mark Radcliffe destroying Coldplay's "Yellow", you might not listen to all of this, which makes it quite humorous.

"You're Gormless" from "The Worst ... Album In The World ... Ever ... Ever"

This takes on "You're Gorgeous" by Baby Bird and is probably less suggestive than the original record, but still funny.

"Feel Like Shite" from "Our Kid Eh"

The Shirehorses in the guise of Doofergrass who were ripped off by Supergrass for "Alright".

"Now I Know Where I'm Going Our Kid" from "The Worst ... Album In The World ... Ever ... Ever"

The Shirehorses get lost on the way to a gig and steal "Love Is The Law" by The Seahorses for this tune.

"West Country Boy" from "The Worst ... Album In The World ... Ever ... Ever"

In the guise of The Charley Twins, The Shirehorses thieve "Country Boy" by The Charlatans for this slice of single-entendre innuendo.

"Arseholes" from "Our Kid Eh"

A very naughty destruction of "Angels" by Robbie Williams.

"Bill Oddity" from "The Worst ... Album In The World ... Ever ... Ever"

A short reimagining ao "Space Oddity" as dealing with giving their cat some tablets, with the normal disastrous consequences.

"No Big Sizes" from "Our Kid Eh"

The Shirehorses take on healthy eating and dieting via "No Surprises" by Radiohead.

"The Ballard Of Franny Lee" from "The Worst ... Album In The World ... Ever ... Ever"

In the guise of Dick Cave & The Bad Cheese the Shirehorses adapt "The Ballad Of Henry Lee" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

In the 1990s Manchester City went down to the third tier of English football under the ownership of Francis Lee and the managership of Alan Ball. The Shirehorses were obviously not impressed being Manchester City supporters.

This is the final song in this playlist but all the songs are on Youtube and the albums on Amazon.

If you have got this far you have probably enjoyed and had a few laughs.

Thank you so much for reading.
