Twitter has long been known for its trolls — people who use the social media outlet for nothing other than denigrating others. These keyboard attackers constantly spread a stream of hate that even the toughest of people may find difficult to stomach on a daily basis.

Ed Sheeran, the Grammy-winning artist known for such popular tunes as "Thinking Out Loud" and "Shape of You," has finally had his fill — and has decided to log off Twitter forever. The singer recently told the Sun that he doesn't understand why these anonymous trolls dislike him so much:

“I’ve actually come off Twitter completely. I can’t read it. I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. Twitter’s a platform for that. One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-f*** for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”

Earlier this year, The Walking Dead star Josh McDermitt left Twitter for similar reasons.

Sheeran clarified in an Instagram post that he hasn't quit anything, but he definitely wasn't reading.

Lady Gaga was quick to offer support for her friend and fellow singer in an Instagram post of her own. She extended a wish to her 24.8 million followers in an effort to stem the tide of vitriol that runs rampant on Twitter every day:

"I wish all people on the internet would be positive and loving and apart of creating an online community that is kind and empowering, not hateful and mean."

Whether or not Lady Gaga's post will have an impact on Twitter's 328 million users remains to be seen. In the meantime, if you tweet Ed Sheeran, don't expect a reply.
