well the best way to write a hit song is really complicated and yet also so simple. Im not going to get to technical here as the new song writer needs to just understand the very basics at first .

Firstly you need to decide on a title . The best titles are short and sweet . It needs to be something that people remember . Who can remember a song with a large title anyway . make it catchy .

Try to write what you are thinking about in your mind . Songs can have a very defined structure yet its also possible to have a song that has no real structure at all .

For the most part the song has a verse chorus verse chorus and sometimes a bridge and a hook line . However some songs have no chorus at all and no bridge or hook line . Of course their are other song writing formulas that are much more complex . Remember the golden rule keep it simple .

you need to decide if the song will have a groove a melody its timing what key it will be in and what genre and what chords will be used . The chords used will influence the key of the song . So some understanding of music theory is a great advantage .

today song writing is much more sophisticated compared to back on the 60s . the lyrics were really of mostly a fun nature . Lyrics have since advanced to writing about political issues during the 70’s . This era was more about musicianship .

Song writing is influenced a lot by the musical instrument played . Piano can give a new and different influence by using piano scales . Many guitarist that experience writers block will switch over to the piano when song writing to give a song a different voicing .

today pop song do not have as much lead guitar . Its more about electronic sounds . lyrics are often repeated . and the mind takes a different meaning when listening to repetitive lyrics . Songs about love or love gone wrong play on our feelings and strike a chord with the fans .

you need to start a journal and write down your thoughts as this can be a great reference for future song writing ideas for titles and lyrics . perhaps you can record a riff or a lick you play on your guitar and then try to expand it . just record what ever you play on your musical instrument .

you need to have a listen to my song [ My blue eyed baby ] It is a verse chorus verse chorus style of song . it has a short title . its hook line is . a red mustang doesn’t spell success. The lyrics include colours that really paint a picture in your mind . eg . red mustang . long blond hair . the song has a groove that makes you want to dance to . on this track i have also created anticipation by stopping the song yet only very briefly . This technique is used by Eric Clapton and many other famous song writers .

the best way to start song writing is jus to put pen to paper and just write down your ideas . don’t over complicate things . If your not making progress just take a break and come back to it later . soon your thoughts will just flow .

Some songs you write will be hits some will what we call misses . and really thats all ok . don’t worry about not being a great singer or musician . that all improves with practice . just keep going and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can not write a hit song . you must always believe in yourself .

yes it can be frustrating . yet you have to find the words to fit the groove . share your music with a close friend to have another persons perspective on your lyrics . they can look at the music from another perspective . other people can have a different look at your music from a different angle . this is due to their different life experiences .

create a nice comfortable quiet space for your song writing . avoid any distractions like mobile phones a radio people in conversation . perhaps light a scented candle .
