Don’t underestimate the underdog

Beatrice laus may seem like your run-of -the mill rising alternative rock singer in late 2020. She might appear to blend in with other indie rock artist from the last 2 years on the scene that you‘re heard mentioned once or twice on Apple 1 Music or Spotify, but make no mistake about it: This Philippines Born, London-raised singer has the potential to be one of the biggest most influential Popstars of the decade and could clearly even shatter a major glass ceilings as a female artist in the music world and Pop music in general. With the rise of K-pop being a stable diet in western music billboards and Nelson Sound top 40 playlist digitally and on the radio, It’s hard to imagine Beabadoobee as someone who will be under the radar, especially with the surge of alt rock from the 2000’s emerging anthems for millennials who already live in a post Covid-19 era.

Why Beabadoobee Will BLOW UP

Beabadoobee

With Asian pop-culture frenzy just lifting off globally over the last decade and millions of teens and college students listening to artist from other markets around the world, There’s bound to be a growing fan base for a London girl with a South East Asian background. Only thing is: it exist already! So what we’re all witnessing before our very eyes is a Global Mega Star in her early phase of her career: in 2020.

Its evident that you may of already seen her perform on a few late light shows here in the States or listened to one of her interviews on Apple Music One before debuting Fake It Flowers(which this article is primarly about) and wondered: Who is this girl? Because once you hear a few of her tracks from any of her most recent projects, you’ll wish to keep this gem to yourself yet feel elated to share it with at least a few of your friends.

Beabadobee body of work thus far plus that one song that became a sample for this white teen rapper on Tikok

For now as the time this article was written in late November of 2020, Beabadoobee has already had two bodies of work with her 2018 Album” Patchup and 2019 :Loveworm.

You may also heard her single Coffee from 2017 that two years later, blew up on Tiktok (and on a Dunkin Donut coffee Covid Pandemic commercial )that since was adapted as a sample for a mellow rap song. This viral hit help get her recognition and catapulted her a a rising alternative rock singer.

Fake It Flowers: The Album you’d ought to listen to before Beabadoobee became a Megastar

So where were you when you first heard Fake It Flowers? You could of only possibly been in only two places : Home during the Second Surge of the Pandemic of 2020 or an essential worker on your way to work by bus, train or driving your car (or carpooling) Why do I bring up such a simple question like this up? Because you NEED to remember where you were while you jammed to this joint for the first time. Kinda like how in 10 years from now, you’d remember how you played your Nintendo Switch during the lockdown and those memories forever become sentimental, so will that moment you listened to Fake it Flowers, track by track. The bass, the drums, the early 2000’s and post 90’s sound. it’s no coincidence that you hear a bit of these retro glares throughout the album because Bea use to listen to artist like The Cardigens and Osasis and countless other rock bands as a child with her mom in the 90’s Which is sprinkle throughout this project.

We’ll look back at this moment in 10 years feeling super sentimental about Fake It Flowers! Mark My Words

What Beatrice had in mind during the production of this album was simply to have a work of art that young girls like herself could listen to while staring soberly in the mirror crying and upset but dance to in animosity yet have a tune which matches a particular mood. Fake It Flowers is all about those unsettling moments and Beatrice definitely achieved and tailored the tracks for those moodswing moments most women go through periodically.

With everything that happen in the course of 8 months since the pandemic happened, there were certainly plenty of those type of bad days for most woman: Breakups, strained relationships, divorce, family drama, you name it. In theory, it’s the album you never knew you actually needed. It’s also the album you’ll sentimentally look back on years later as you awe at Beabadoobee’s progress within her( by then,)prosperous career.

Track By Track

Care:

This track sets the entire mood of the entire album and is generally about how Bea doesn’t care if you’ll get her personally and is unapologetic about who she is and doesn’t give a damn about your opinion of her. This track definitely gives off late 90’s Tony Hawk, sweaty gym clothes laying in your room while playing PlayStation 1 vibes. Has a bit of a rom-com of the 90’s feel within the lyrics too. Will bring you back to that era in your life if you grew up in the late 90’s.

Worth it:

In this track, Bea confesses some of her temptations while on tour on what she could of done or got away with dispute the fact she was in a relationship. A song you could bop to after getting out of a nasty situation and just want to dance your anger away in front of the mirror. Sonically, it gives off early 2000’s vibes and is very catchy. MAke sure NOT to skip over this song.

Dye It Red:

It’s one of those songs about what guys want in a girl and how females should insert more confidence in how they appear to theirselves and not always to the opposite sex. Another acoustic heavy song that will give you that 2am at a bar listening to an alt rock band play vibes.

Back To Mars:

Beabadoobee performing at Webster Hall In New York City by Kyle Smith

Orginally suppose to be featured on Space Cadet, the anmospheric dark tone of this track was actually a shift to the more nostalgic acoustics you heard during the early part of the album. Produced by Pete Robertson and intended to be a fast paced song that experimented a little to switch the tone up. Still worth a solid listen.

Charlie Brown:

I heard a lot of frustration and yelling during this track which was inspired by a striped Charlie Brown Tattoo on Bea’s arm. This angry track has a catchy hook and bridge which sound not Angry in a sense that you’d wish to punch someone in the face but in a fun concert rockish kinda way. The drums and riffs on the acoustics are heard during the hook makes you feel like you’re at 2am concert hall with smoke and people vaping and smoking cigarettes. Which is something most of us probably missed doing among this tough life-changing year.

Emo Song:

Beabadoobee performing at Webster Hall in New York City by Kyle Smith

This song is about Bea’s teenage years and blends end with the next few songs from a production perspective. Pete Robertson suggested that this song had a mellow and sad tone instead of a load abrasive acoustic riff like some of her earlier songs from this project.

Sorry:

When Bea was recording this song, she half cried because it took her back to a time when her friend and her back in high school did drugs that caused her to go through a super dark time in her life. The off acoustic riffs during the hook indicates the ecessive drug use and regret she had partaking in them at a young time in her teen years.

Further Away:

Super positive and light for this project but needed to balanced the previous offish track.

Horen Sarrison

Gives me an impression of watching the mid part of a Disney movie where they have one of those numbers and Singh songs moments. A six minute Song about being in love. Beautifully produced and relaxing

How Was your Day?

Recorded during the beginning of lockdown, this song goes back to the roots of a four track and playing with strings. If the production sounds a bit low grade, it’s because it was recorded outside in her boyfriend’s garden. lyrically, its about her being away from home and missing her friends and family. Of course she was going for the Coffee sound she had 3 years prior to this project. Only time will tell if this track will be sampled and used on an obscured Tiktok clip.

Together:

This song is a homage to any female rock artist onstage. It has electric and acoustic riffs as well as drums vibrantly in ambiance and the track is better quality from what was played previously.

Yoshimi, Forest, Magdalene

ITs a distorted, fun, crummy song and the name was inspired by the name Bea would name her 3 Children. I feel this must of been the grand finally where no F’s were given in quality and was all about the expermental elements of the music being creative in the moment.

Takeaway:

Beabadoobee

The first 3 tracks were solid and are embedded in my head whenever i need to remember something from a certain point in 2020. Some tracks in the ladder part of the project were also good but take me back to other parts of my life during 2018 and late 2010’s for some reason. As for production, most of the last 3 tracks bled together seamlessly and sounded similar to each other which if that’s what Beabadoobee was going for, then was definitely achieved but caused me to stall and get restless with certain tracks.

However, don’t let that take away from the fact that sentimentally, as Beabadoobee becomes a mega star, we’re look back that this era in her career fondly as we’re coping with the ramifications of the global Reset and how differently are lives are then versus how they are right now at the time of this article being published. Savor this moment, because we may not get this type of light hearted alternative rock from Beabadoobee again once she’s bigger than life and super mainstream. Like a time capsule, this album and the tracks will bring sentimental feeling within you as we all face the most global induced challenging times in recent history. Just keep that in mind.
