For anyone who knows my music preferences well, they know I like a little bit of everything, primary Hip-hop, RnB and Pop. But I dabble into other genres too because different styles of music activates triggers differently depending on what’s being listened to. This article won’t go over the physics of music theory nor how it affects the human‘s mood, however there’s a few songs that I’d decided to play over and over due to boredom and being stuck in quarentine. They say to treat your mental health with self care, which i have been doing, but I’d noticed how I also would be singing a few songs off of the Newly rising British Pop Star Dua Lipa with her acclaimed album Future Nostalgia.

How do I feel whenever I listened to the album?

While being stuck in my apaprtment alone, listening to this newley released album 2 times straight, there were only a few songs that were drilled in my head that once I look back in 20 years from now, will have serious sentimental meaning of what life personally meant for me in the early 2020’s. The song that would be muttered as I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, or hummed as I cooked supper.

And as I heard this particular tune play in my head, I thought how this late 70 , Dark Wing Duck sounding track off of the album would be the intro to a good new tv show That you just know is gonna be lit.

And even more interesting than that is the meaning behind Dua Lipa’s Single “Break My Heart” and what makes it intriguing.

Break My Heart

It’s a song you can “dance cry” to and samples INXS’s Need You Tonight. According to Zane Lowe Live, Dua Lipa explained The whole song was inspired by that moment in your life whenever your in a good place and with an amazing person. If something goes wrong down the line and that person ends a relationship, it screws up that bliss you had therefore afraid of being too happy surrounding the current moment of excitement during that period.

I guess several people in the beginning of 2020 were optimistic About their futures and goals that they wanted to achieve unitl COVID-19 ruined their plans. The correlation between that anadote and the idea behind Break My Heart could play hand to hand. As you listen to the track and hear Dua Sing ed

“ I would‘ve stayed at home, cause I was doing better alone,

But when you said hello

I knew that was the end of it all”

And you could say that a lot of us are at home, in lockdown, But when we go outside and expose ourselves to the public, we’re saying hello to Coronavirus, which we know will end up badly. At least this is how I see it, but it’s not about the coronavirus, its about regretting jumping into a relationship and being fully in love with someone who threw it all away. Plus it’s a song that gets caught into your head of what life would’ve otherwise been like if Coronavirus didn’t exist. I don’t believe that Dua Lipa’s Team knew anything about the the rumblings of this virus when she recorded this track specifically back in 2019, but listening to it now during this social distancing world we live in today, it brings excitement and some form of zest in a dystopian uncertain world where you can’t travel, Go to concerts or shake hands.

Future Nostalgia has the dark synth late 70’s and 80’s feeling as you walk though the grocery store social distancing or broke with no money and hit hard from being laid off.

Future Nostalgia

US Producer Jeff Basker and Dua Lipa wrote a Feminist anthem about empowerment and sexiness resonates of of this 80’s/00’s sounding synth track. Giving any woman the power to embrace their unique power and position while not taking oneself too seriously. Gives me an early 00’s Britney Spears/Christina Auglaria Type of energy that after a 5 listens, started to get stuck in my head. This song would fit in scenarios where ideally, if you’re a female, would be getting your hair comb and make up on before going out to an event, movies, or clubbing. I’m going to reach that this is the type of energy that Dua Lipa was trying to create with this track.

But the only time you’ll be listening to this song is not before going to the movies or having a girls night out crusade, but trapped between four walls bored as hell or painting your toenails and fingernails while jamming this song in the background of your Alexia Speaker or smartspeaker while sitting in bed. I don’t really see this as a single but I could be wrong, maybe not the most popular of the songs.

Don’t Start Now

One of Dua Lipa’s heartbreak dance cry songs that has a strong drum and disco influence. Any woman who experience heartbreak and felt that rebounding at a disco or club will most likely resinate to this track. It’s about when you finally find your way out of a toxic relationship and find someone else that makes you happy when all of a sudden an ex wants you back out of jealously. One of her first featured singles of late 2019, and an impactful dance track that was playing everywhere in night clubs before COVID 19 Made our lives a dystopian authoritarian mask wearing lifestyle.

Cool

This is another song that I could definently being played on Kiss FM during the summer in late july or somewhere near the summer. It’s more of an experimental track that A&R were pushing on Dua since after her 2017 self titled Album. But once she got into the booth with Tove Lo, a producer, the track was finally realized and physically manifested. This song was danceable and fully with the 808’s and synths simular to the darker gym ready song Physical.

Would of been super fun to imaginE this track being used on Tiktok as E-girls display their bikini runway walks on pool Side patios during the summer.

Dua Lipa self-titled album At The Grammys in 2018

Or cruising in a Honda taking your kids to a summer camp sweating with the humidity while your windows rolled down as a payola track on Kiss FM somewhere in Pittsburgh 1-79 . But unfortunately by the time summer does arrive, summer won’t be too fun because life simply won’t be same and I can’t imagine people going to public pools in some places might not even be open yet. It’s still a good song but if this was one of those “grand finale as a single for the summer“ singles to hit radio waves soon, it’s super untimely due to Coronavirus affecting communities and public facilities.

Physical

Eventhough Dua Lipa wanted this song to be the starter of taking shots or getting the party started and merging the wilder part of it after people showed up, the 808 synths and beat makes me want to exercise more so than drink and dance. I could imagine someone running to this track at 5 in the morning at a Planet Fitness elicpical machine, but couldn’t picture this throwback vibe track as something I’d hear in clubs everywhere. Then again, that could of been the international intent of this song. Would it of been a dance track in LA night scene, nah, In Bankok, Thailand, probably.

Levitation

This song was produced around the time when Dua Lipa felt that her team and label were on board with the concept of her Future Nostalgia album. With it’s 70’s 808 synths and its retro bubbly sound and lyrics about finding the right person and going alone with the moment in time without worry or second thoughts that were conveyed on Break My Heart. It’s definitely a dance track that isn’t jarring and dance cryish but is total opposite of Break My Heart. It’s like George Clinton meets 2020 neo disco and funk. Very fun listen and has massive replay value.

Play this track at a 70’s theme party for Generation Z along with baby boomers and everybody is in for a fun 3 minutes of disco Stuish finger air.drop thrusting and great family reunion memories. Unfortunately COVID-19 will create an anthosphere of indoor could of been fun...at a fire hall or wedding reception turned into a living room dancing.

Good in Bed

This song is a fusion of left-over of a 2010 sounding type of sound of said pop singer kinky confession of a sexual liaison. But in this track , Dua expresses how some relationships are together solely based on the sexual component. It’s s light departure from the heavy late 70/80 influences sprinkled thoughout this album. The Classic piano Keys breathes the silliness and might take you back to your more sensual expereince if you were quarentined with a love one.

The takeaway

I wouldn’t say that Future Nostalgia is Quarentine worthy as this album was particularly designed for feminist woman who love going out and being free at bars and clubs. It’s for those who love the weekend and enjoy those girls night out at pubs or discos. But with the impact of COVID 19, we’ll need to wait and see once things get to normal(which I believe it might never completely be normal again) fairs out in these night club establishments. Once did go out in early 2020 or late 2019 perhaps had a taste of Dua Lipas Don’t Start Now so I guess her music was able to transcend somewhat towards the common goal it could of reached if the rest of the album was allowed to be played if COVID wasn’t a global pandemic and non essential businesses were still allowed to stay open.

That’s not to say that each single of the chosen songs I reviewed weren’t fun and danceable, even if it meant doing so in your room, bathroom or living room, at least for now.
