Lu Castro

Lu Castro is a rap battler's nightmare and Hip Hop Star's dream that was raised in the Bronx, NY. Despite a tumultuous childhood, Lu's parents maintained a collective effort to raise their son the best way they knew how. Money was tight and it resulted in moving around. Music was his only consistent friend and the words of 50 Cent, Chris Brown, and Kanye helped to ease the stress. They inspired him to keep going. By the time Lu was 13, he was convinced he could be a rapper simply because he knew he couldn't sing. That same confidence would channel when he made it into the URL years later.

Reminiscent of a boxer, Lu steps in the battle rapping and verbally destroys his opponents. Each battle amassing thousands of views on URL TV and capturing the hearts of those who love the craft. Still in his gut, he wanted to be recognized as an artist. His shot would come when the opportunity arose to write a song for the hit show Star on Fox. The moment didn't feel real until he watched Brandy belt out his works as Queen Latifah watched.

The positive resulted in more songs to follow. As Lu gears up for his first LP release, his family is constantly motivating him to win. He knows the blueprint he will leave behind to help someone else succeed. Lu Castro is just getting started.

I got to connect with Lu Castro and talk more about the inspiration behind “My Day." Vocal readers, please enjoy our interview!

Lu Castro

Tammy Reese: Congratulations on your BET Jams feature. What is that like?

Lu Castro: It's amazing to me honestly because I used to watch bet jams all the time so to see myself on tv is like a dream come true.

Tammy Reese: Please tell us about "My Day"?

Lu Castro: The whole theme behind the song and the video is just not allowing anybody to get in the way or pretty much mess your whole day up because of what they’re going through. A long time ago I realized that we have 24hrs in a day and usually any inconvenience or thing that could get in my way would not ruin that whole 24hrs for me and I’d keep moving and that’s pretty much where the overall theme for the video and song came from.

Tammy Reese: What does music mean to you?

Lu Castro: It’s a way out and an escape for me .. I’ve always loved music but realizing that something that I genuinely loved could make a better life for me and the people around me was always the driving force for why I go so hard at it.

Tammy Reese: What impact do you intend to make as a music artist?

Lu Castro: I want to show there's no ceiling to being a rap artist… I feel like when I battle rap most of us tend to get placed in a box and I feel when you’re an overall artist or even want to be you can do whatever kind of music you want. I intend to break the stigma around battle rappers and just lyricists as a whole that we can only do one thing good.

Tammy Reese: What are some of your own songs that are meaningful to you?

Lu Castro: My day is currently my most meaningful song. I currently have another song called flood the city that means a lot to me because of the mood it puts me in.

Tammy Reese: What was it like growing up in the Bronx?

Lu Castro: It wasn’t always easy for us. We didn't have a lot but my mom always made sure it didn’t seem that way she worked hard so did my dad even though they were split I think they did their best to give me the opportunities they never had.

Tammy Reese: What are you currently working on?

Lu Castro: My next project called “To Make A Long Story Short” currently I am working on that. It should be out by the end of the summer.

Tammy Reese: What do you enjoy better freestyling or writing and why?

Lu Castro: Songwriting has always been my first love.

Tammy Reese: What else can we be on the lookout for?

Lu Castro: Mainly just my EP that will be dropping soon. I feel it’s going to be a game-changer for me and my team.

Tammy Reese: How can we follow your career?

Lu Castro: You can follow me on IG and Twitter at Whynotcastro that’s pretty much where you’ll get most of the updates on Music and what I have coming up next.
