If you're out there looking for ways to secure your future music career or enhance your professional life, networking with groups of people can provide you with many unexpected opportunities. Although no rules dictate how you should go about doing this, there are several guidelines that you'll have to keep in mind to improve your chances of creating a reliable contact.

1. Don't expect an answer

Just because you give someone attention, doesn't mean they'll have to give it back to you. If anyone decides to ignore you or doesn't reply immediately, don't build up an attitude in response to them. If you act rude, they'll do anything in their power to avoid you. In such cases, just be nice to them.

2. Practice conversing

Have you ever conversed with someone who is a little rude, maybe a little weird, but you let it go because they're your friends? The people whom you're trying to connect to won't be your friends at the beginning. Because of that, you must try your best not to look awkward or do something offensive. Remember, you're trying to make a first impression, and be sure that it is a good one. If you know that you're socially awkward, why not practice conversing? You can do that in front of a mirror, or even take classes for it.

3. Don't barge in

You should be determined, but not so much that you come off as annoying. Don't go around talking too much or too loudly in front of people, unless you want them to find you extremely irritating. Also, you should never ever barge into a conversation. By walking into a discussion and presenting yourself, you aren't going to be credited for being brave. Instead, you'll simply irritate the chatters.

4. Show good manners

A simple greeting and even a “thank you” can go a long way to landing you a reliable contact. Always remember to show your appreciation when someone hands you their business card. You can even send them an email later thanking them for giving you an opportunity. By showing good manners, you present yourself as approachable, and that will entice your contact to keep in touch with you more often.

5. Don't look desperate

It's all right to talk to people and to be friendly. There is also nothing wrong with keeping in touch with someone after your first meeting. However, what you should avoid doing is to act like you're always "ready" for a chat. By that, we mean that you look like you want attention. Don't present yourself as desperate that you're always on maximum alert for the faintest clue of somebody considering to talk to you. You'll only deter them from ever making contact with you again.

Remember, be persistent, but don't push too far. Always present yourself the best way you can and be respectful and kind. You're not the only one trying to make it in this world, so by following our tips, you give yourself the best chance possible in landing a contract for your music career.
