That Summer
“Warm out today.” Grandpa likes to state the obvious like that. Growing up I’ve heard him say that it “sure is raining” when we’re in the middle of a torrential downpour and that it’s “a mite chilly” after we’ve gotten a foot of snow. He rocks back and forth in his chair on the porch and I wonder if I’m getting too old to spend my summers out here. I’m seventeen now, I mean this is pretty lame. I could be going to concerts, not out in the middle of nowheresville Texas.

Time Enough
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. The clouds would last for ten minutes, and in that timeframe there was a chance to board the bus. Tyler sat at the bus stop and waited. He’d missed it last week and the week before that he’d been short on the fare. But not this time. This time he was ready. He was the only one waiting at the bus stop that night, though he had expected that. You only got to ride the bus once, and most people in town that were interested in it already had.

Foundling
There was something in the forest that shouldn’t have been. Olgor wrinkled his snout in confusion as he tasted the air again to double check. He tasted blood on the air and inhaled deeply. Horse. Sweat. Metal. Leather. The forest smelled of battle, but there were no human settlements nearby, not for a great distance.

The Shifting Sands
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. If Shadi remembered right, they’d come about twenty years ago, when she was just a child. She adjusted her spyglass as a sudden gust of wind kicked up the sand from the dune she was hiding behind. Shadi ducked down, swearing softly and wiping grit out of her eyes with her free hand. Would a dozen bolts would be enough to protect her if she was exposed? It was an uncomfortable thought. She’d taken few chances, wearing thick robes over her tunic and a face covering to blend in better, but she knew their attention was easily drawn by sudden movement.
