Forelle
Water ran in squiggly lines, through dirty snow, finding the path of least resistance as it flowed towards the lowest point. Mornings were met with kids tempting their fate on how deep the water might be under the layer of ice on puddles. Afternoons the sun beat down doing her best to help earth remove the blanket of snow, leaving mud and puddles to delight children and annoy parents with extra loads of laundry.

Frozen
Tillie wrapped the shawl around her face tighter, hoping to block the wind out. But, the wind found its way through any clothing, helping the already cold December day steal away all warmth. She grumbled to herself as she walked along the wooded path. Why had she not gone to get the supplies her mother needed the day before. It was cold yesterday, but at least the sun was shining and that made a big difference. Today the sun was hidden behind thick clouds preventing the warm rays from reaching her. And, there was the wind, the wind blew all the time here. She thought the wind had been bad back in Chicago, but here it was miserable. She had come to accept the constant howling it produced, but in the winter months she cursed it daily. It found its way through any crack in the cabin, it whistled down the chimney threatening the fire, it blew great mounds of snow across the front porch and walkways. She kicked at a drift working hard to cover the trail, only to be greeted by a spray of the white powder in her face as the wind caught hold of her frustration.

Arctic Adventure
Mid January loomed gloomy, cold, and dark. The colorful and cheery Christmas decor that had once brought excitement and joy had been removed from most homes and yards taking with it the happiness of the season. School had resumed despite the complaints of children. Each morning Teri and Rodrigo pulled the covers up over their heads and begged to stay home; their pleas falling on unsympathetic ears.

Engine Failure
Bree sped along watching green and golden fields with the occasional tractor fly past as she belted out, “The Wheels on the Bus,” for probably the hundredth time, a desperate attempt to keep Orlee, her daughter, happily entertained. A flashing green light on the dashboard caught her attention, squeezing the steering wheel and fighting the urge to shake it, she muttered, “No, No!”

Alaska Dream
Joel had been dreaming about this trip since he was a little boy. He could remember sleeping out on the trampoline with his best friend, Kyle, gazing into the sky planning the adventures they would have here. He couldn’t remember what prompted the desire to come see Alaska, but it grew as they did. In high school they read “Into the Wild,” which pretty much sealed the deal that one day they would come, visit Bus 142, see amazing wildlife, hear glacier ice crack and moan beneath them, summit Denali, and have the greatest adventure of their lives.

Halloween Rodeo
Warm days had fled and the crisp autumn temperatures brought colored leaves and chilly mornings. Carved pumpkins, scary decorations, and fall colors were put out adding a splash of life and fun to the brown yards around town. Teri and Rodrigo were excited for the upcoming Halloween festivities and had spent hours working on their costumes. Well, mostly Teri’s costume as it required the most work to bring together. Every weekend and some weekdays for the last month had been spent working hard on their costumes. They finished everything up the day before Halloween and were ecstatic about going to school to show off their hard work. Teri had turned her wheelchair into a raging rodeo bull complete with some stuffed pants and cowboy boots down each side to make it look like she was riding the bull. Rodrigo had dressed as a rodeo clown so they could be a matching pair. Halloween day they rode together to school, both chatting excitedly about their outfits and all the fun-filled activities their teacher and the school had planned for the day.

River looked down at the huge package next to her desk wondering where it had come from. It showed up sometime during her lunch break and she had no idea who had sent it.
