Film Review: 'Greatland'
In the vibrant utopia known as Greatland, life is all about diversity and love. At least, that's what Ulysses (Arman Darbo) grew up believing. But that worldview changes on his 15th birthday--the day he's set to undergo a mandatory rite-of-passage ceremony. It's on that day that Ulysses and his best friend "Ugly Duck" (Chloe Ray Warmoth) witness her father Mr. Lee being "sent to Resurrection" for not reporting how his daughter had contracted a virus that was plaguing their world. Having already seen how Mr. Lee was punished with becoming invisible and mute for conceiving Duck through "Stone Age procreation", seeds of doubt have already been planted in Ulysses' mind about Greatland's "perfection".

Lifetime Review: 'Just What the Doctor Ordered'
The last time we saw Dr. Albert Beck (Eric Roberts), it seemed like his days on the run were over. Institutionalized after his latest crime spree and sentenced to electro-shock therapy, things appeared pretty bleak for the lovelorn doctor. But in the midst of a fire at the mental hospital, Albert was able to escape and take refuge inside an abandoned house. Too bad for Albert that his hiding place is also the new home of Maggie Newell (Carrie Schroeder) and her 18-year-old daughter Alex (Grace Patterson). But before Albert can make his escape, his lustful eyes are locked on Alex and a new obsession is born.

Short Film Reviews: Teacher Appreciation Week
Speaking as someone who graduated college just as the COVID-19 pandemic was starting to pick up steam, the virus had a stark impact on the already precarious education system. As COVID lockdowns forced schools to close their doors and take to the Internet to continue educating, teachers have had to deal with the additional stress of having to reformat their lesson plans to accommodate for virtual schooling. I can only imagine the host of problems that might arise from trying to teach an hour-long class over Zoom.

Documentary Review: 'The Astrology of Pandemics'
Can astrology be used to predict pandemics? It's a question most people probably haven't thought about lo these many months, but is at the epicenter of this documentary, made in response to COVID-19. Looking back at other pandemics throughout history, The Astrology of Pandemics sets out to see if astrology has a connection to how pandemics of the past progress--and if it could be used to predict and prepare for future epidemics. With astrology's status as a pseudoscience, it's almost a guarantee that there's going to be some people that will reject this notion on principle. I must confess, as open-minded as I try to be, there are parts of this film that had me thinking, "OK, you're starting to lose me with how far you're reaching..."

Documentary Review: 'Narratives of Modern Genocide'
As 2020 made clear with the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, racism is still alive and well. While many would like to believe that we've left this kind of irrational hate behind, we're still a long way off from eradicating bigotry from our society--if such a thing is even possible. That's one of the unspoken themes of Narratives of Modern Genocide, a documentary that focuses on the stories of two genocidal attack survivors. While just about everyone knows about the Holocaust, this documentary centers on two lesser-known genocides: the 1970s Cambodian genocide committed by the communist regime known as "The Khmer Rouge" and the massacres that marked the 1993-2005 Burundi Civil War.
