The Lion and the Goose
Leon's eyes opened quickly, as if he was already awake. He let out an exasperated sigh. In his mind, he'd already gone to work, dealt with his manager's incessant story- telling, gone grocery shopping, come back home to the sound of his roommate screwing his girlfriend, put the groceries away, taken a shower, cooked himself dinner, eaten dinner, attempted to watch an episode of the Netflix series he'd been trying to finish for two months, then given up and gone to sleep. Leon's day was set in stone. Now he just needed to get up and follow the script.

Train and Break
Train Jodie walked up the subway steps and into the crisp New York air. It was 7 PM. She was heading to her best friend’s house. It was only three blocks away, three long New York City blocks that is, but she didn’t mind the walk. She didn’t like Ubers or Lyfts. The idea of being in a stranger’s car with said stranger and potentially picking up even more strangers was very unsettling to her. Sure, she carried a taser that was made to look like a typical smartphone. It lived in her pocket. But she never wanted to actually use it. There was one time where she thought she might’ve had to, but thankfully a bystander intervened. She didn’t even want to imagine what would’ve happened if they didn’t. Living in the city her whole life, she’d heard way too many firsthand horror stories about the things women went through on a daily basis. She was honestly surprised that she hadn’t had more negative experiences. That was a really sad thought to have. Why was she surprised that more people had NOT been assholes? Is that really how bad the human race is? Is that how bad she expected them to be? Sometimes Jodie wished she was a dog. Dogs have it so easy. They’re born, and then more often than not, given to a loving family. They get all the food and belly rubs they want. They just lay around and get loved on all day. They don’t have a care in the world. The last time Jodie didn’t have to worry about anything, she was in diapers. She didn’t have any bills to pay, appearances to keep up, or people to pretend to want to impress. And now, the only people whose opinions she gave a quarter of a shit about were her friends’. She smiled as she arrived at her destination. She’d been looking forward to this sleepover all week.

Almost
“We’ve got an obvious burglary and homicide here,” began the officer. “Victim number one, and the owner of the house has been identified as Michelle Rockwell, 29 years old, throat slit from left to right, looks like the cut gets deeper as it goes on. Seems she was killed right here. Victim number two on the other hand appears to have been stabbed in the chest, abdomen, and legs an astounding number of times in the kitchen and dragged out into the living room to rest next to the first body. His name is Calvin Haines, 33 years old. There’s also a third victim who the attacker roughed up pretty bad. Alex Cumberland, yes, the Alex Cumberland. Apparently he had been dating Ms. Rockwell, but she broke up with him a few months ago and began dating Mr. Haines soon after. Mr. Cumberland discovered some of her items at his apartment and decided to bring them back to her, where he discovered the attacker slitting Ms. Rockwell’s throat. He then busted down the door and tried to wrestle the knife out of the attackers’ hands, but the guy punched him in the face pretty bad, kicked him in the abdomen a few times, quickly stole some really valuable items, and fled the scene. Mr. Cumberland then called 911 and tried to stop Ms. Rockwell from bleeding out, but the cut was too deep. Also, he says the perp wore a mask and gloves so he couldn’t get a look at the guy’s face.”
