Escape chapter 3B
Kelly was nervous about going into state custody. She had heard horror stories about bad fosters and unhappy kids. She didn’t want to end up with that kind of life. And she was incredibly comfortable with the Wilsons, especially Garrett. She wanted to ask his father if there was any way she could stay with them, but she didn’t have the nerve. Instead, she spent the day cleaning and making herself useful. She hoped he would see value in that and come to the conclusion she would be good to have around.

Escape chapter 3A
“Hey, Bill,” Detective Steve Tower said when Bill answered the phone, “the girl’s story seems to check out. I’ll dig into it a little further, though. Family disappeared a couple of weeks ago according to housekeeping at the extended stay. Nobody had reported it, though and so we weren’t looking.”

Escape chapter 2B
Kelly followed Garrett into his house, through the garage. She had been calm when they had pulled in, but when she was faced with actually meeting his father, she started to freak out a little on the inside. He’d calmed her down. He turned her to face him and told her it would be ok. She didn’t know why she trusted him so much, but she did. Maybe it was his eyes. Every time she looked into his eyes, she gained a little inner peace and calm.

Escape chapter 2A
Kelly didn’t want to get out of the Jeep. She was too tired and weak. The Scrambler sat in the middle of the old ghost town, Booth… just half a dozen dilapidated buildings… and she just sat in the seat. But she’d stopped shivering and a little color had come back into her face. Garrett had already given her his last sandwich, and another Coke. She’d finished off a bottle of water and a couple of candy bars, too. But she still only barely talked to him. Nothing beyond a few one-word answers to basic questions.

Escape chapter 1B
Steve Bird pulled off the state highway into the gas station. He’d been leading, but as they approached the trail they had talked about, he became less sure of his sense of direction. He’d been there a couple of times, but Garrett had always been the one to take the lead. He always marveled that Garrett usually knew a trail somewhere that they hadn’t done. He waved his friend around as he called out on the radio for him to take the lead. Then his phone rang.

Escape chapter 1A
His face was inches from hers, his fetid breath filling her nostrils with its stench. She wanted to retch. Even her own bile in her mouth would be an improvement. She looked into his yellow eyes. All she saw was pure evil. His greasy hair hung down around her eyes, blocking off the rest of the room… his face was the totality of her world.

Lucinda's Choice
The courier van slid to a stop on the gravel in the trailer park. The driver looked around cautiously. Evening was giving way to night as the shadows lengthened around him. There were no external lights, and few shining from the trailers around his van.
