Bio
I write, I read, I cook, I preserve, I strive to be my best at them all. But, writing, cooking and preserving are all works in progress - just like life. I've got the reading down pat except for the lack of time.

I Wanted a TV Dad
Why are you being so mean to your stepmother?” asked my father. It was June 1980 in a pizzeria in San Leandro, California. I wasn’t from California and in fact, this was the first time I had been in San Leandro. My sister and I had been in California a week so far. My dad and I were sitting here on Monday evening in this pizzeria because my father wanted to talk to me. And I knew exactly why I was being “mean” to my stepmother. I suspected something – I suspected something that was huge and would hurt my mother, my sister and me. I didn’t know if I had the courage to ask though because my father could be mean especially when he was drinking and a beer sat in front of him right now. He scared me when he drank and quite often, I would hide in a book and escape my current reality. The pizzeria/bar was loud, and I was scared of him, but I had to know because my stepbrother had hinted that I was completely naive.

Summer Begins with StrawberriesTop Story - June 2022
Our summer food season revolves around the desire to fill our shelves with fresh summer produce to use in the dreary days of winter. It might also be pride and ego that makes us think that we can preserve summer better than any factory. We don’t have to count the bugs in our foods since we wash more than 3 times when prepping food (unless beets - then maybe 5 times). There is also the gratification of knowing that we have taken food at its best and put it up to enjoy later. We love having the jars lined up on the shelves at the end of September. We are surrounded by farms here in Central PA and some are minimal or no spray - and organic. Some aren't. We buy from both, but still the produce is at the height of its perfection. We love it.

Summer All Year LongRunner-Up in Summer Camp Challenge
Summer is food. Trying to sum it up in one food seems impossible. It makes it doubly hard because I spend my summers putting my fresh local vegetables and fruits in jars so I have them for the winter. Depending on the year, we can put up between 400-800 jars. We try to have a good supply of around 1,000 jars by the end of summer between one house and the other.
