Downfall
Tonight was the night she would kill him. She gazed from across the room, gripping a bejeweled hairpin in one hand. Without realising, she grasped it tightly, so tightly her knuckles were starting to turn white. The precious gem sparkled at one end, reflecting the shining silver and gold of her sumptuous tunic. At the other end: a sharp and deadly point.

Mary leaned against the wall and sighed inwardly. She hated these late showings. Her friends were out on the town tonight, dressed up to the nines, looking young, free, and beautiful. It was just after nine, so they would be at a bar now, sipping on small flutes of champagne that fizzed and sparkled like the girls themselves, feeling wild and alive on a warm summer’s evening in the greatest city in the world.

Today I Was Woken By An Air Raid Siren.
I live in South Korea, a highly developed, modern, peaceful, safe, democratic country. Unfortunately, our neighbour to the north is none of those things. Except in one way – they do have some very modern missiles. Technically, the Korean War never ended. The fighting stopped on 27th July 1953 when an armistice agreement was signed, but no peace treaty ever was. Therefore, 70 years later, the two countries remain at war. However, you’d never know this unless you, well, know it. North Korea is often in the news, but nobody in South Korea is actually worried about this frozen war. Until today.

Love Is Not Enough
Night was descending as the metro lurched to a halt. I gathered the last of my energy, grabbed my heavy bag, and stepped off the sweaty carriage, away from the hot and sticky breath of a hundred strangers and into the cool evening air. It washed over me like a gentle wave as I spotted my boyfriend heading towards me. I smiled, but he did not return it. He never smiled upon meeting. It was a curious habit that irked me on normal days, but irritated me immensely that day after the hellish journey I had just endured.

Don't Be So Paranoid
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cosy A-frame cabin. We were excited, happy. The journey had been fun, and we’d been giddy with anticipation. We’d chatted and giggled like two teenagers on their first road trip. We’d sung along to our favourite tunes, munched snacks and slurped drinks, and then waddled quickly, skidding slightly on the ice, to service station bathrooms. But now, we were quiet and still, speechless at the beauty of the cabin and its surroundings.

Reflections
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cosy A-frame cabin. Out the corner of my eye I saw him looking at me expectantly, waiting for a reaction I knew I couldn’t give him. I pretended not to notice, and continued staring out the passenger side of the windscreen, watching the snowflakes hurl themselves at the car.

In a former lifetime, I worked for a very fancy company. It’s the kind of company that most people have never heard of, including myself before I worked there, because it caters only to the obscenely wealthy. I fell into it by accident, having been looking for jobs that required fluent French speakers. It was a small, close-knit operation, and I loved my co-workers. Every day felt like hanging out with a bunch of friends. But when the CEO came into town for the annual Christmas party, we were all on our best, most professional behaviour.
