We are just a passing thought to one another
I'm thinking of you when the ocean licks my feet. In my memories, I am still wet with your kisses. In another life, we would have been lovers or friends too close for comfort. We still could be but you rang out from across the room and braced yourself against a doorjamb pretending not to look, feigning interest in a passing cloud.

The dead trees on both sides of this macabre road line up like bony corpses with contorted arms. We recoil in horror. The bruised leaves dangle from their branches like limp fingers. The air smells of our decomposing dreams.

August 25, 2021 I didn't drive myself into that ditch. This is how everything played out. I was speeding on I-95 and texting, as usual, when my screen had a glitch and began flashing with some demonic circles and I couldn't get it to stop, no matter how many times I cursed.

That morning, I awoke … and saw my life was pointless. I was failing 9th grade. I didn't have a boyfriend. I didn't even have any friends who wanted to go hang out with me in an empty parking lot behind that out-of-business sawmill, or anything like that that would give me some illusion of happiness.
