Debunking the Roseanne Myths
Have you ever had a moment that you wish could be erased from history? May 29, 2018, I had one. My Facebook is littered with pop culture talk because, well, I love pop culture. As I was covering the big story, Roseanne Barr's racist tweets, for various websites yesterday, I found myself making a status. This status basically said that Roseanne would not be canceled because it was the highest rated show on TV and ABC would not give up that ad revenue. As if Channing Dungey was just waiting for me to post it, the minute my status went live, so did the news that the sitcom had, in fact, been canceled. Ouch. People celebrated, but Barr still had her supporters, who were out in full force. They keep repeating the same stances; Bill Maher said the "N" word, Joy Behar called Mike Pence mentally ill, her show was canceled because she's conservative. Let's debunk these arguments one by one, shall we?

Will and Grace Defended Roseanne
"Oh honey, you're over analyzing this. Sit down and have a martini." That's what I imagine Karen Walker would say when (if) she read this essay of mine. Nobody puts more thought into what sitcoms are trying to say than me, especially since I want to write a whole book about what Will and Grace is actually about. That's a whole different topic than what is going to be discussed here. This time around, I want to talk about an episode they did that I am pretty sure is a defense of the Trump supporting Roseanne revival.

The Demonization of Self Publishing Needs to Stop
Sometimes I see something on Facebook and it makes me want to throat somebody. Maybe that's not the best way to start an essay, but it's true! So the other day I was scrolling through Facebook and saw a meme that made my blood boil. No, it wasn't one about Trump, though that is a good guess. This one was about self-publishing and how it's bad for everyone involved because nobody makes money, except for the book cover designers and editors, which I will not only refute but show why that is an asinine argument to make in the first place.

Why Roseanne Succeeded Where Idol Failed
Within the last month, ABC has premiered two revivals of classic shows, American Idol and Roseanne. One is withering on the vine despite a hefty price tag, and the other is mired in controversy over a star's political beliefs. So why is one show thriving and the other dying? The answer is both simple and complicated and has to do with the producers of the show.

And 3 Makes Tension
This is the first time that I am putting this story into writing, and it freaks me out a little bit. The person, my co-star, if you will, will never read it, and even if he does, he can’t get ahold of me to yell about it. The reason for that is a different topic than this one; this is about the worst date that I have ever been on. Sadly, this story is 100% true. However, I have changed names to protect the not so innocent; I choose to put my life out there for consumption, they do not. Are you intrigued yet? I hope so because we are about to begin.

The Wage Gap Soap Opera
General Hospital's Carly Corinthos was Hell in Heels. She stole her mother's husband, lied about the paternity of her son, and framed her lover for murder, and that was just a Thursday. Her original portrayer, Sarah Joy Brown, won back to back to back Emmys for her performances. Yet today she revealed that she was paid less than half of what her former male costars, Steve Burton and Maurice Bernard, made. This drags soap operas into a national conversation for the first time, and they are not on the right side of history.

The Fault in the Ginuwine Controversy
"Ride it, my pony. My saddle's waiting..." Ginuwine sings in his biggest hit to date, "Pony." There's at least one subsection of the population that is not invited to ride his pony: trans-women, as India Willoughby found out the hard way. They are appearing on Celebrity Big Brother across the pond in England. Ginuwine said he would not date a trans-woman, much to India's ire. She even tried to embrace him; that led to another cast member to crack, "He's just not that into you." This led to an internet conversation (argument?) with some accusing the rapper of being transphobic, and others saying India is an opportunist. Both sets are wrong.

The Nonsensical 'Roseanne' Twist
Who is going to watch the new Trump-loving reboot of Roseanne? If I'm honest, the Trump-loving part lost me, but I may still give it a shot because why not? It's my job to keep up with pop culture, and the Will and Grace reboot also went heavy with the politics their first episode. There's another thing, though, that has me on the edge of my seat, story-wise. In the original finale, Dan is dead. He died. How in the world are they going to write around that?

Why 'Will and Grace' Is Essential Now!
As I write this essay, I am listening to the audiobook version of Fire and Fury by Michael Wolff, and wishing that I wasn't. The book by all accounts seems to be well researched and Wolff's writing style is informative, as well as entertaining. The issue is the subject of the book, Donald J. Trump. His ascension to the highest office in the land and the chaos that has ensued since is replayed with a bird's eye view of the Oval Office. It's all well and fine but there needs to be some levity. Enter Will and Grace.

Should Oprah Run for President?
Donald Trump is probably seething right now. Republican leaders are scrambling this morning. Why? Because last night Oprah Winfrey gave, what many are considering, her first Presidential stump speech. Will the beloved icon run for the nation's highest office? The better question is, should she run for President?

Here's the Thing, Taylor Swift
Is there any celebrity more careful about her reputation than Taylor Swift? Even as she begins to change her image from the good wholesome girl that many have come to love to the bad girl that she thinks she is in her head, Taylor wants to control what the press says about her. Such is the case with the burgeoning feud Swift has with blogger Meghan Herning. The issue is that with the internet and bloggers becoming more of the mainstream media, Taylor can't control things the way she used to.

Why is Kevin Spacey More Condemned Than Others?
I am pissed at Kevin Spacey. It's true that I've never been a massive fan of his, though American Beauty stands up to the test of time. House of Cards helped launch Netflix into the original programming arena and earned him multiple Emmy nominations. Even the allegations that Anthony Rapp leveled at Spacey can take that away. That story that Rapp told about Spacey coming on to him is why I have such vehement anger at the Oscar winner. But a friend asked me a question that needs to be examined: Why is Kevin Spacey getting the wrong end of publicity surrounding sexual abuse and sexual harassment that has engulfed Hollywood over the last month?
