The Day I Became a “Cat-Person”
I’ve always been a dog-person. I grew up with dogs and God did I love them. They were playful, they were affectionate and were great companions. What’s not to love? Cats however, well they weren’t really for me. I once had a roommate who had a cat, Lucy. Lucy would stare at me in a way that I know cats just do naturally, but in my mind, I knew she was looking at me with distain. And the feeling was mutual. And because she was mostly not so nice, I made a blanket judgment about all cats. They are evil.

Hey Little Girl
Hello again to everyone here. I’ve been on a hiatus that lasted way too long. What the hell happened, I’ve asked myself? A lot of people have written about despair in the face of the war in the Ukraine and the multiple harbingers of climate disaster staring us down. I felt paralysed by the constant updates on these large scale calamities, and at a small scale level I was also busy with work (numbers of despairing children and teenagers are proportional to the level of community Weltschmerz — plus they feel the shock of televised war and the threat of climate change the most). There had been a lull in appointments over the Australian summer — warm weather and the long school holidays always seem to produce a land-of-the-lotus-eaters effect: it’s always afternoon, and there’s little to no motivation to get back to normal life. Then suddenly the school year started and the trickle of appointments became a torrent, and I spurred myself on with “Hey, this is not too bad, at least we’re not in lockdown.”

I Was Told to Unbury My Cat
As a kid, I have had my fair share of times I deeply felt that excruciating pain of losing a pet. But after losing families of rabbits and parrots and hens, I started to not feel that anymore. Nothing to complain about here though. I guess eventually one begins to take death as it is: the ultimate and inevitable truth that one must always be prepared for.

The Best Possible End
One of the things I’ve learned about being responsible for the well-being of animals is something they don’t typically teach in animal behavior school: What to allow used, or not allow used, at an animal’s end of life. Years ago, I and one of my dogs suffered irreparably as a result, so I’m going to share what I learned in hopes that others won’t suffer a similar fate.
