Actually, Dude, Exactly No One Says the World Will End in Ice
Joshua and I had an ongoing argument about what was more authentic. He liked to bid on auctions or maybe he'd go to somebody's garage sale and buy up shoeboxes full of old postcards. To me, that wasn't the least bit real, that was buying it.

Every Serial Killer Has a First
Most of the time you know why somebody's trying to kill you. You might not want to sit down with the sheriff for a chitchat about the reasons why, but you know. Somebody doesn't like you, and they think this lovely blue planet would look prettier without you. Or somebody wants what you got-- money probably, but sometimes something they can sell for money.

They Call Me Steal Magnolia
Some nights, the magic neon bulb lights up your skull and you're reading their cards like an open book. You can't make a mistake. Game's going like that, you can't leave. A Kestrel Offers His Thoughts on the Vacation Rental
Well, I for one voted for the Roman castle. There's just something about being able to bob your head to tell the girls modestly and sweetly that, “Oh, as a matter of fact, I do happen to live in the castle.” What's with the rut? Who said we have to fly back to the exact same place every year?

The Afterlife For Beginners
I'm writing this eighteen years later to the day. July 9, 2003. A relentlessly white-hot day that left after-images on the eyeballs. So different from today, and most every other day this year. Oh, they say the world is on fire, but in New Orleans it hasn't stopped raining for months.

The Barn Caper: A New Orleans Story
Louise was a sturdy, pop-eyed white woman with a white Ford F100 pickup truck. She had a vague hustle going where people paid her $25 to clean out their attics. They pretended to think she was going to a cheap dump on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain. For what they paid, they had to assume she was dumping illegally, something they didn't have the nerve to do themselves.

My Coffee Shop Romance
I'm sitting at one of those little plastic two-top tables in the bookstore. Cafe latte in a paper cup. Sugar cookie the same size as the paper plate it's sitting on. I've just hung my jacket off the back of the chair when some guy swoops in to pick up my sugar cookie and put down a slice of chocolate cake in its place.

I Just Remembered Something
Poet's note: I have many stories I could share about watching and listening to Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls, beautiful and often confiding small owls with a persistent song. In some parts of Mexico, they are easily found, heard, and photographed, and that's where I nabbed this shot in November 2016. The expression on the bird's face has inspired me.

If The Rain Comes Here
Poet's note: A few Januarys ago, I was in Jujuy with two other birders chasing around in search of various plumages of the mysterious Variable Hawk. Over the course of the search, we crossed through the very white, very bright salt flats of Salinas Grandes, and I grabbed the chance to nab these photos with my little camera.
