Doodle 4 Google
How Google came up with the Doodle 4 Google competition

Every year, Google is one of the most widely used technology companies in the world, and one of its most creative traditions is the Google Doodle. A Google Doodle is a special version of the Google logo that appears on the homepage to celebrate important holidays, famous people, scientific achievements, and cultural events. Inspired by these creative designs, Google created the Doodle for Google competition, an annual contest that allows students to redesign the Google logo using their imagination and artistic talent.
The history of Doodle for Google began in 2008 in the United States. Google wanted to encourage children to express their ideas through art while also giving them an opportunity to share their creativity with millions of people. The first contest asked students to create doodles based on the theme “What if…?” Thousands of students from schools across the country participated, and the contest quickly became very popular. Because of its success, Google continued the program every year and later expanded it to other countries around the world.
The idea for the competition came from Google Doodles themselves. The very first Google Doodle appeared in 1998 when Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin attended the Burning Man festival. They added a simple stick-figure drawing behind the Google logo to let users know they were away from the office. People enjoyed the design, and Google began creating more doodles for important events and celebrations. Over time, these doodles became a major part of Google’s identity and inspired the creation of Doodle for Google.
The competition is open to students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, including homeschooled students. Each year, Google announces a new theme that encourages students to think creatively about the world around them. Themes often focus on dreams, kindness, community, inventions, or hopes for the future. Students create original artwork using crayons, markers, paint, colored pencils, or digital art programs. The artwork must include the letters of the Google logo while also representing the student’s interpretation of the theme.
After students submit their artwork, judges review the entries based on creativity, artistic skill, and how well the theme is expressed. The competition is divided into age groups so that younger and older students are judged fairly. In many years, state winners and finalists are selected before one national winner is chosen. Some contests also include public voting, allowing people across the country to support their favorite doodles.
Winning the competition is a major achievement for students. The national winner usually receives a college scholarship, technology packages for their school, and national recognition. Most importantly, the winning doodle is displayed on Google’s homepage for millions of people to see. This gives young artists a chance to share their ideas and creativity with a global audience. Many finalists and winners have said the experience inspired them to continue studying art, design, animation, or technology in the future.
Over the years, Doodle for Google has become more than just an art contest. It has encouraged creativity in schools and helped students express their feelings, experiences, and hopes through art. Many doodles focus on important topics such as protecting the environment, helping communities, improving mental health, and imagining a better future. Teachers and parents also support the contest because it combines art, imagination, and education in a meaningful way.
Today, Doodle for Google continues to inspire millions of students around the world. The competition shows that art can be a powerful way for young people to share ideas and tell stories. By giving students a platform to express themselves, Google has created a program that celebrates creativity, diversity, and imagination. Doodle for Google remains an important opportunity for young artists to dream big and show the world their unique perspectives.
Voting has already closed so hopefully we’ll see you the next winner.
