Rediscovering “Black Pitcher”: A Lost Piece of Mid-Century Modernism from the 1945 Art Institute of Chicago Exhibition
Art Institute of Chicago 49th Annual Exhibition tag. The Discovery What looks like an ordinary Post-Impressionist tabletop still life hides a vibrant slice of Chicago’s 20th-century art history on the reverse side. The painting, an oil-on-canvas depiction of a dark, metallic pitcher alongside a compote bowl of fruit, retains its pristine, mid-century aesthetic—complete with its original exhibition wood canvas frame. Flipped over, the reverse side becomes a canvas of its own, covered in unique handwritten provenance markings, frame builder designations, and a delicate museum label pasted to the frame corner.

Been playing around with so called 'artificial intelligence' image generation for the past few years. Since 2022, to be precise, and much has changed since then. Let's be clear about one thing from the start. AI is not intelligent within the normal, everyday meaning of the word. AI is no different to any other digital electronic computer program algorithm, in that it is limited in function to the process of adding and subtracting electronic numbers (numbering Zero, or 0, to One, or 1) and then repeatedly manipulating those two numbers. This is the whole fundamental basis of digital electronics. The manipulation of a logical state of "on" or "off"? The fact that AI appears so powerful is the result of how how much digital computing has advanced in recent decades. AI can do what it does purely by a colossal speed of processing, storing, and manipulating unconscionably large numbers. This is why there is such a clamour for building more and more 'server farms' to provide this calculating capacity.

I was immediately drawn to the painting because of its bright, cheery nature and the beautiful flowers and birds dispersed throughout, as well as the expression of pure jubilation on the young lady's face who is featured in the piece!
