THE SECOND MIND
At 2:17 in the morning, London had become strangely quiet. Rain had polished the streets of Bloomsbury until every lamp and window appeared twice, once in the city and once in the black pavement beneath it. An almost empty night bus moved through Russell Square, its yellow interior glowing against the wet darkness. The Georgian buildings opposite Daniel Mercer's flat stood in their usual dignified rows. Some windows were dark, others still lit, but the whole city seemed to be continuing its work without asking anyone to notice.

A wonderful and thought-provoking 1985 oil and acrylic painting called Blue Monday , created by an uber-talented visual artist named Annie Lee, features a young African American woman sitting on the edge of her bed while trying to muster the energy to go to work on a Monday morning at a job that she does not enjoy. Hence, the woman in the painting is essentially fighting the "Monday Blues."

I recently read an article discussing the ten most famous paintings in the world. It reminded me of a visit to an art gallery about twenty years ago. Don’t get the wrong idea here. I am not an arty person. I have a few original paintings in my house that I bought for the colours and the overall “likeness factor."
