President Biden has made the provision of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip conditional, after Israel announced on Wednesday that it would allow Egypt to provide limited aid to civilians. The aid is the first aid to Gaza since Israel laid siege to the area for 10 days.

The announcement to allow water, food and other supplies came after President Biden visited Israel on Wednesday in hopes of preventing large-scale conflict in the region. During a one-day visit to Israel, Biden announced $100 million in humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, but said "the aid will end" if Hamas confiscates the aid.

Biden's visit sought to balance U.S. support for Israel in its war against Hamas with concerns about civilian casualties. He made it clear that the United States supports Israel and Hamas' right to defend themselves from terrorist attacks, but sought to allay growing concerns among Arab allies that the current war could escalate into a larger conflict. And so.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the approval to allow the aid was given after Biden requested it. He said Israel "will not thwart" deliveries of food, water or medicine from Egypt, as long as they don’t go to Hamas militants.

Upon his arrival, Biden met with Netanyahu and said an explosion at Gaza City's al-Ahli Hospital, which left hundreds of civilians dead, was not Israel’s fault — as Hamas and Palestinian supporters claim. On Wednesday, Israel announced that the Egyptian president had agreed to open the Rafah crossing, the only route from Gaza to Egypt, to allow humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza. The first group of 20 trucks carrying relief supplies won't begin until Friday at the earliest, White House officials said.

Egypt must first repair the cross-border road damaged by Israeli airstrikes. More than 200 trucks and about 3,000 tons of relief supplies have been deployed at or near the Rafah border crossing, said Khalid Zayed, the Red Crescent's director for North Sinai.

Israeli officials said Hamas had confiscated past aid it had given to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to build an extensive network of tunnels and buy weapons.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told Al-Arabiya TV that the new deliveries would be made under UN supervision. Asked if foreign nationals and dual nationals wishing to leave the country would be allowed to enter, he said: "As long as the border crossings are functioning properly and the (temporary) facilities are being repaired." .
