Why Write Poetry? In Fact Why Write?

Introduction

A lot of people I am acquainted with don't even read books, the headlines of from newspapers seem to be their limit. Their reasoning being, why read a book when you can watch the film? As Peter Jackson said, "This Lord of The rings is Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings", plus a book tends to contain a lot more than a film or TV adaptation, not that I am averse to films and TV series based on books. But back to the point of this piece.

Why Write (Poetry)?

I joined Vocal for the money, nothing else. I thought that with a ten-thousand-dollar prize, I could do that. If you don't believe the money, check this out:

Since joining Vocal, I have written a lot, touching every community and 36% of my Vocal publications have been poetry. I have been criticised for my poetry not being perfect, not following form, not rhyming, and it still confounds me that we get 999 compliments, and it's the one criticism that sticks in our minds.

Anything can be a poem, like anything can be art.

The creator just has to confirm that it is what it is.

This is an article about why we write, and why that may be poetry.

I see some writing designated as poetry, which to me is a story, and Vocal allows Prose in the Poets community. I do similar things with my Thoughtpieces:

We write to record our feelings and ideas, and to share them with others and hopefully be appreciated, make others think, or start discussions.

I find all writing therapeutic, although few of my non-Vocal friends read my work for reasons I stated at the start of this piece.

Sometimes people tell me they can't read all my work, and I certainly don't expect that. I say treat my work like a newspaper, and read the bits that might interest you, and don't bother with the rest. Do you ever read the whole of a newspaper or magazine? No. Do you read the whole of a book? Yes, if it is a novel, maybe not if it is a reference book. I don't think I have ever read a dictionary end to end (I think I tried in my teens).

I write mostly for enjoyment and to share things. I also enjoy chatting with others about what we do and getting ideas from others' creations.
