Being a writer is something you can do without a single other person knowing that you write.

You can write in the dark by candlelight and hide the pages in the floorboards, but being an author means that you are gathering those pages and putting them out there where the rest of the world can have access to them

Be Persistent

Write persistently

Edit persistently.

Submit persistently.

There will be a hundred reasons for you to give up. It would be easier, but that's not how you will become an author.

Watching TV is easier than sitting down to write. Saying you'll do it tomorrow is easier than making the time to do it today.

Being an author is choosing to write when life would rather you do a hundred other things.

It's choosing to write through the self-doubt, the rejection, and the distractions.

Rejection Does Not Mean Failure

If you are starting on the path to being a traditional author you need to understand that getting rejected from an agent or a publisher does not mean that you have failed, but instead, it goes right back to that first thing you needed to know.

It means you need to keep trying.

It might mean the agent didn't think they were the right fit for you.

It might mean your manuscript needs a little more work, but it will never mean you failed.

The only way you can fail is if you give up.

So don't.

There Is Always Room To Improve

Sure learning to write may have stopped in elementary school, but learning to write novels never does.

There are resources all over the internet to help you improve your writing skills such as workshops, books on writing, blogs from other writers, and online courses. Sure you can pay for these but there are plenty available for free as well as being available in your local library so there is no need to put yourself in debt.

There is also a wonderful thing that can help you improve your writing at little to no cost to you…

Books.

Read any and everything you can get your hands on as there is no better way to learn from masters than to study the masters at work.

The journey to becoming an author is going to be challenging, but in the end, it's going to be worth it.

Best of luck!

Even though I am a writer of reviews/critiques and a few other things I do consider myself an author. I have had a few articles published in a few magazines.
