Open Your Hands

At the end of a year 2020 that was different

By FOUAD GAMIL Published 6 days ago 1 min read

At the end of a year that was different, it left a distinct mark and impact on each person. The predominant feature was loss: some lost loved ones to death, others lost friends or relationships that were important and impactful to them. Some lost their jobs and source of livelihood, while others lost support, whether emotional, psychological, or financial. Some lost their sense of comfort and belonging in places like places of worship, while others faced moments of darkness, loneliness, and uncertainty, which are among the deepest and most intense tests because they have the power to shake one's very being. Yet, from these trials emerges a decision, a decision accompanied by a genuine desire for change—a change in reality in hopes of a better future.

There are many tests, and if I were to ask each person about their own, I'm sure each would describe a unique experience with feelings that only they can truly understand.

But there was another characteristic that was also present and impactful: hope. Hope that tomorrow will be better, even if reality suggests otherwise, and even if human weakness seems overwhelming. There was always hope for improvement, hope for change, and hope that no matter how long the trial may last, there will come a day when it will end. Everyone experienced feelings of disturbance, but everyone also experienced feelings of hope, entering a new year with this hope. Perhaps it may be faint or subtle, but it will certainly grow and flourish. The story doesn't end with just hope; it also brings compensation and blessings.

So let's leave behind all that is painful and embrace the new year with hope in God, trusting that tomorrow will be better.

Today's invitation is to open our hands that hold onto pain, suffering, or past trials, and to let go of all this weariness and despair, holding onto hope that tomorrow will be better.
