I’m Over 70 and I Started Posting Online. Here’s What Surprised Me Most.

You don’t need a team, a studio, or a young person’s energy. You need a phone, a memory, and the willingness to share.

After 70, You Can Still Create Content: A Guide for Older Adults

Many people think content creation belongs to the young.

Spend time in the comments on Toutiao, Douyin, or WeChat Channels, and you will see something else. A large group of creators over 70 publish steadily. They do it well. They do not chase trends. They do not rely on twists. They do not manufacture anxiety. They write about what they bought at the market. They photograph flowers in the park. They talk about bickering with a spouse and making up. Young people cannot produce this material in the same way. They have not lived it.

Time is one reason. Young creators squeeze work in after their jobs. They wait for the weekend to film. They edit until midnight. After retirement, time belongs to the creator. Write today. Film tomorrow. There is no rush.

The material is another reason. Seventy or more years of life is ready-made content. What they have seen, lost, and kept does not need to be invented. It only needs to be shared.

So creating content after 70 is not a stretch. It fits. Two forms work especially well: text and short video.

1. Text-Based Content: Quiet, But It Can Go Far

Text is friendly to people over 70. No camera. No makeup. No lighting. If you can type, use a keyboard. If you cannot, use voice input. You can write sitting or lying down. Two hundred words today. Three hundred tomorrow. It is not tiring.

What Can You Write About?

Daily life. Today you went to the vegetable market. The woman selling vegetables had chilblains on her hands. You gave her five extra yuan. Your heart felt warm. Write that down. It is content. No need to elevate it. No need to summarize. The detail about the chilblains does the work. Readers will feel the warmth.

Memories. The river near your childhood home. The factory where you worked. The color of the clothes your spouse wore when you first met. If you do not write these down, they scatter. If you do, people your age will connect. Younger people will find them fresh.

Reflections. How to adjust after retirement. What you have learned about getting along with your children. What you fear most as you age. What you cherish most. These topics do not need grand principles. Write what you think and do. Honest thoughts have more power than correct-sounding lectures.

Professional knowledge. If you were a teacher, doctor, engineer, or accountant, turn what you know into plain articles. How older people can avoid scams. How to manage high blood pressure day to day. What helps children write better essays. Young people need this. People your age need it more.

Poetry, calligraphy, and painting. If you have hobbies, photograph your work. Add a few notes about the process. That is good content. You do not need to be professional. Enjoying the process is the content.

How Should You Write?

Do not chase elegance. Do not force length. Start with one small thing each day. The key is detail.

Do not write, “I was happy today.” Write, “Today my wife and I went to the park. The magnolias were blooming. She said they looked like the year we got married.”

Do not write, “I miss my old friend.” Write, “I found an old photo. On the back was his phone number, written in handwriting that has already faded.”

Once the detail appears, the writing comes alive.

Where Should You Publish?

Toutiao has many middle-aged and older users. Its recommendation system is friendly to beginners.

WeChat Official Accounts are good for longer articles. Fan loyalty is strong, but growth takes time.

Xiaohongshu works for photos plus short text. It is easy to operate.

Meipian works for photos with writing. Many older users are there.

The main advantage of text is that you can keep going. It does not drain your body. It does not depend on a fixed schedule. Write more on a good day. Write less on a tired day. Slow and steady often goes further.

2. Short Videos: Recording Daily Life Is the Best Content

Short videos are direct and spread faster. Many retired people already do this. They travel, eat with friends, sing, dance, garden, and cook. They pick up a phone, film a clip, post it, and people watch.

What Can You Film?

Daily life. Cooking, gardening, walking, visiting the park, looking after grandchildren. Young people may think there is nothing to film. For older creators, these are exactly what makes the content real.

Travel and living elsewhere. Go out with your spouse. Gather with old friends. Film the scenery and smiling faces. You do not need polished editing. Natural sound and natural footage are enough.

Talents. Playing an instrument, singing, calligraphy, painting, handicrafts, tai chi. If you have one skill to share, you can keep producing.

Professional popular science. A retired doctor talks about health. A retired teacher talks about education. A retired weather forecaster talks about weather. A professional background is hard for others to copy.

Nostalgia and local culture. Film old streets, old buildings, and old crafts. Record memories that are disappearing. This content gets views. It also creates an archive.

How Should You Film?

A smartphone is enough. Film near a window or outdoors during the day. Good light makes the picture clear. Use your natural voice. Do not force a dubbed voiceover. Editing can be very simple. You can also skip it and post directly. Horizontal or vertical is fine. Pick one and stay consistent.

Do not chase perfection. People watch older creators for authenticity, not polish. A slightly shaky frame or a slower way of speaking does not matter. If it is too polished, it stops feeling like you.

Where Should You Publish?

Douyin and Kuaishou have large user bases and strong recommendation systems. They are good for starting.

WeChat Channels is built on WeChat. Friends and acquaintances can see it. Interaction feels warmer.

Xiaohongshu is good for lifestyle content. Many young users are there, but older creators have an advantage because they are different.

The main advantage of short videos is fast feedback. Once you post, people like and comment. Older adults feel a strong sense of accomplishment. Being seen and getting a response is its own reward.

3. Can You Make Money? How?

Yes. But take it slowly.

Platform Revenue Sharing

This is the easiest way. If there are views or reads, the platform gives a share. Douyin, Kuaishou, Toutiao, and WeChat Channels all have similar systems. The income may not be much. It is good for the beginning.

Advertising Partnerships

After you build a following, brands may come to you. The main advantage of older creators is trust. Audiences feel you are real and reliable. Advertising often performs well. Some older creators charge from a few thousand to tens of thousands of yuan for a single ad. Top creators charge more.

Advertising partnerships mainly focus on brand promotion. They do not always require livestream selling. That is friendlier to your energy.

Affiliate Sales

Put product links in your account shop window. When people buy, you earn a commission. Categories suitable for older audiences include clothing, daily necessities, and food. You do not need high-intensity livestreaming. Recommend naturally within your daily content.

Paid Communities or Memberships

If you have deep experience in a field such as calligraphy, health, education, or writing, you can set up a paid community or membership. Fans pay monthly or yearly for priority answers, special Q&A sessions, or exclusive content. This requires a loyal fan base. Do it slowly.

A Realistic Expectation

Most older people will not make a lot of money quickly. A 57-year-old aunt created content for nearly a year. Her WeChat Official Account earned 20.27 yuan. Her Toutiao account could withdraw 53.72 yuan. She wrote, “What we write is not articles; it is life. What we earn is not money; it is confidence.”

That sentence stays with me.

For people over 70, content creation is first a way to enrich life. Income is a bonus. Being seen, getting a response, and being needed are rewards in themselves.

4. They Are Already Doing It

A 73-year-old retired teacher posts two short updates a day on Toutiao. Each is only two sentences. “This morning I went to the vegetable market. The woman selling vegetables had chilblains on her hands. I gave her five extra yuan, and my heart felt warm.” Every post received over 100,000 reads. More than 60 percent of his fans were middle-aged and young people in their 30s and 40s.

Pipia, 76, shares cooking, fashion, and travel with a smartphone. No team. Sometimes just a selfie stick. She films and edits herself. She has tens of thousands of followers.

Li Qingbao, 72, a retired weather forecaster, turned his living room into a weather science classroom with his wife. She asks questions for netizens. He explains the principles. They have made 179 episodes.

Wang Yang, a retired teacher in his 70s, used more than 3,400 short videos to record the streets and alleys of an old town. Every brick and lane became a digital museum of nostalgia. Total likes reached 1.5 million.

Su Ye, 65, became known for a 15-second video of him playing “Moscow Nights.” It reached one million views in six hours.

Those creators are not exceptions because they are old. They are exceptions because they kept going. Age did not stop them.

5. Important Reminders

The biggest risk for older content creators is being scammed.

Some MCN agencies target middle-aged and older people. They promise “5 million guaranteed views,” “fast account growth,” and “low barrier, high income.” After signing, they set high penalties for breach of contract. Many older people get trapped in disputes. Other agencies sell training courses such as “AI editing” or “unmanned livestreaming.” They charge thousands of yuan and teach only the basics.

Please remember:

Do not easily sign with any MCN agency, especially one that approaches you first and promises guaranteed income.

Do not spend money on “instant influencer” courses. Douyin, Kuaishou, and WeChat Channels all have official free tutorials.

Protect your privacy. Do not reveal your home address, ID number, or bank card information.

Communicate with your children. If you are unsure about something, ask your family first.

Do not be greedy. Do not rush. If someone says “easily earn over 10,000 yuan a month,” there is usually a problem.

6. You Can Start Today

If you are over 70 and want to try content creation, start like this:

Today, write down one thing you most want to remember. Two or three hundred words. Post it on Toutiao or a WeChat Official Account.

Today, film a tree outside your window, a meal, or a walk. Post it on Douyin or WeChat Channels.

No need to post every day. No need to go viral. No need to compare yourself with others.

Treat it as a diary, a window, a way to speak with the world.

Content creation is not only for young people. It can be a stage for older adults, a warehouse for memories, and a bridge for emotion.

May every older person who is willing to share find a place on the screen.

You can post without chasing traffic. You can earn nothing and still get a reply. You can be old and still be seen.

After 70, it is a good time to create content.
