Song Writing Without Boundaries by Pat Pattison

This is writing practice for me. I was going to write every assignment and I have written several however, it feels like I am not getting any better with metaphors, so I am moving on to the chapter on writing in rhythm and rhyme for next time.

Crossbow — Firing

On the field the crossbow was firing a perfect shot each time she let go of the arrow, like a child can find his place when let out of the house at just the right time and age.

The crossbow is enviable with the arrows firing smoothly, quiet sailing across the wide expanse of the field in the same way a schooner glides across the water in a regatta.

90-minute timed writing:

Crossbow firing, like on Naked and Afraid, could be the only protein source in 21 days. Crossbow firing is like hitting the target of life where you can hit or miss your target. There are countless ways but one of the most important is showing love and receiving it.

Kettle - Spewing

The tea kettle began spewing a steady stream of boiling hot water like a volcano shooting flames into the sky that ran down the hillside.

The kettle makes a hissing noise as it spews forth announcing the arrival of the hot water, we have waited for in much the same way as when the doorbell announces the arrival of a long-awaited package.

90-minute timed writing:

A kettle spewing is much like political spewing, it isn’t pretty and doesn’t always get you what you want. Debates are not fun to watch as two old men say the opposite both expecting what they say to be taken as truth when neither will be taken that way, they can’t be. It is about the win, not about what is best for the country.

Waitress — Helping

At the diner on the corner the waitress is busy helping 4 tables of regulars like the nurse makes sure the patients in her care receive everything they require to make them comfortable.

A waitress helping is a reminder of good customer service. It is important for her to provide good service if she is expecting a good tip.

90-minute timed writing:

A good waitress helping is worth a good tip. Some expect a tip even when they are a waitress not helping. At a buffet, should the waitress get a big tip. No more than getting a big tip as any other helper for not helping. What is a waitress not helping worth today? Nothing? Aren’t we already paying for the service in the food cost? A tip is meant for going beyond the usual.

Summer — Steaming

The summer steaming made it so you couldn’t see our head through the clouds.

Summer steaming made it difficult to see our way through the parking lot to our car, in much the same way it can be difficult seeing much of anything waking at 3:00 a.m.

90-minute timed writing:

Is summer steaming heat unbearable to be in like the cold can be unbearable to be in without proper clothing? Summer steaming is much like fog only hot. The fog is steaming, unlike summer steaming. What is steaming like in summer? How about the tea kettle on the stove?

Graduation — Celebrating

Graduation celebrating is over for another year for me. Graduation celebrating is like throwing away money at the casino. You don’t get anything back from the money thrown out, other than giving someone free money.

90-minute timed writing:

Graduation celebrating is done, like my birthday celebrating was over for another year in February. Taking months to celebrate is too much for most. Graduation celebrating is fun to begin with but gets old and expensive after a while in the same way it is old and expensive when raising children. It is more fun having grandchildren. A birthday celebrating party for a new 10-year-old today.

Everything, well almost everything should be done without boundaries. Make life fun-ner. This is great.

I believe that you are getting better. Choosing metaphors is definitely a skill worth improving.
