5 Ways to Improve Your Writing
Tips I had to figure out on my own
Write Consistently
It doesn’t matter if you’re inspired or not, you need to make a plan and write every day. Of course it’s not going to be good every time, because first drafts and brainstorming is the first step. But the more often you write, the easier it will get, and the more content you’ll actually make. When writing a first draft, it’s not about perfection, but about finishing the story. You can work on the rest later.
Start With What You Know
Are you an expert in anything? Is there something you feel passionate about? Start with that. Write what comes easily to you first. You don’t have to publish it, but it can work as a great warm up.
Order of Out Write
You do not need to write in order. If there is a scene you have in mind, write that first, even if it’s just a few words. If you start from the beginning and try to work your way through to that scene, your motivation may die before you ever reach it. Or worse, you forget. When I write a story, I like to write scenes as they come to me, and put them in order afterwards, so I can figure out what to put in between.
You Write What You Read
If you read nothing but Lord of the Rings, your writing will be full of flowery descriptions. If you read comics, you’ll get more ideas for comics than novels. If you read Monster High books, than your writing will sound like it’s meant for grade school. So whatever genre you want to write, read it, and that’s what you’ll put out. If you read nothing at all, then you’ll be creatively constipated.
That’s not to say you can’t mix and match; a sci-fi written with a cynical modern tone can certainly exist. Just make sure that what you’re reading reflects what you hope to write.
Get Out and Do Stuff
Experience the world around you. Learn different perspectives, try something new. If you never leave your room, then the only thing you’ll be able to describe in detail is your smelly socks on the floor. Even going for a walk or listening to music can be a great source of inspiration. Your brain loves to learn, and doing that in any capacity will impact your writing, and make it a little more interesting.
