The bookshelves at your local store are covered with books, not even to mention the hundreds of thousands that are available online.

How is an author supposed to have their book stand out when it's an ordinary fish in a barrel of other ordinary fishes?

By being different.

There are three things you can do to make sure your book, with its wonderful story and compelling character journey, is just as wonderful on the outside as on the inside.

Book Covers

The old saying of "never judge a book by its cover" doesn't mean anything to the book industry nowadays.

Now a reader is specifically going to pick up your book because of its cover.

Besides, I think this saying is from the time when books only came in light leather, or dark brown, maybe if you were lucky blue, but at one time all books looked exactly alike.

Your cover needs to catch your readers in order for your story too.

Create or hire a creator to give your book a design that reflects the tone, genre, and theme of your book, or just go for as eye-catching as you can.

As a side note, if I see a book with a sprayed edge I immediately pick it up and many on the reading side of social media apps do the same.

Catchy Book Description

What's the first thing someone does after they pick up a book from the shelf…?

They turn it over and look to the back for the description.

Your book description is your one and only chance really to grab that reader before they move on to the next pretty book on the shelf.

If your book description is boring - they're going to assume your book is just as boring.

Highlight the most compelling aspects of your book and give them just enough that their curiosity will be peaked and they'll start flipping to the first page just for a moment before their feet find themselves shuffling toward the register, book in hand, and money already spent.

Build an Author Platform

If you want your book to stand out then you need to be putting yourself and your book out there looking for potential readers instead of waiting for them to find you.

Self-marketing and advertisement are basically free with the use of social media and it gets your book in front of the eyes of hundreds of potential readers.

These readers will be browsing the bookshelves and happen across your name and there will be a connection there that will have them reaching for the book to see what it is you were talking about.

---

Writing a great book is step number one.

Making that book as great on the outside as it is on the inside is step two.

Step three is repeat.

Best of luck!

With love,
