If you think that TikTok is just for tweens and teens, think again. GenZ, GenX and even Baby Boomers are avid users and creators, as well.

This article explores TravelTok more in depth. The travel category on TikTok is only one of the many interests and hobbies you can discover. Read more about the big picture of different possible niche communities and subcultures on TikTok that might inspire you in this article: What the Heck is TikTok?

#traveltok, or #tiktoktravel is a popular community on TikTok because the user-generated videos are raw and authentic. This makes armchair travel more relatable, entertaining, and educational. In the past, travel videos and documentaries have been polished, advertising and commercial experiences.

TikTokTravel Subcultures

Travel topics, niche communities, subcultures, and genuinely great content can be fun to explore in the world of TikTokTravel. Billions of views prove this is a popular category.

Let's look at the astonishing statistics for #travel as of early December, 2022:

Hashtag and views (k = thousands, M = millions, B = billions)

  • Travel 118.9B
  • TravelTok 5B, TikTokTravel 36B, TravelTikTok 18.2B
  • travelbucketlist 5.8B, bucketlist 4.1B
  • Dubai 109B, NYC 80B, NewYorkCity 12.2B, London 53B
  • Staycation 3.1B, Roadtrip 11.9B, amtrak 162.8M

If you want to get super specific on subtopics of travel, there is still intense interest in users to consume content that is obscure, specific, niche, and unique:

  • Bondibeach 472M (most popular beach in the world on TikTok)
  • Uniqueairbnb 21.2M, Treehouse getaway 50.8k
  • Carryonhack 8.2M, packinghacks 177M, traveltips 4.7B

  • vacation 24B, staycation 3.2B, beachvibes 8B, beach 46.2B, cruise 5.2B,

What aspect of travel is appealing to you? Are you wanting hacks, tips, and tricks for an upcoming trip? Do you want recommendations for places to stay, things to do and great restaurants? Do you want to see rural and off-the-beaten-path experiences? Or, are you wanting to get a good idea of the must-see touristic spots for a given city or country?

You can find all that and more! You can either search for what you are interested in, or you can allow the "for you page" to show you videos you might be interested in (if you are brand new, you will have to train the algorithm to show you content you will probably be interested in).

Subcultures include some of these fascinating lifestyles and interests:

  • RVing (recreational vehicle-ing), motorhome, motorhomelife, digital nomads, camping, parks and rec, Yosemite
  • Wanderlust, cultural experiences, volunteer abroad, peace corps
  • International cuisine, international fashion, lifestyle, etc.
  • Languages, tourism and communication
  • Retreats, Spiritual pilgrimages such as ayahuasca, Stonehenge
  • Adventure travel such as spelunking, scuba, liveaboard, ziplining, whitewater rafting, epic trail hiking, ski, parasailing
  • Romantic getaways, destination weddings, alternative lifestyle resorts
  • Volcano, jungle, river, rainforest, safari, island, beach

Influencers of #TikTokTravel

First, what qualifies as an influencer?

According to TikTok, a video creator cannot host a "live" video event until he/she/they have reached a minimum of 1,000 followers. Clickable links to a creator's website is also allowed after 1,000 followers.

In order to apply to become an influencer who can monetize on the number of views from their followers, creators must reach a threshold of 10,000 followers on their channel. Although, savvy TikTokkers can monetize earlier and in other ways by effectively using the link in their bio.

Here is a (non-comprehensive) list of some of the influencers and interesting content creators for #tiktoktravel that you might want to check out, depending on your interests.

User name, number of followers, and tagline or description of their channel

  • @gezgintivi 2.9M 5-10 second videos of exotic locations all over the world
  • @traveleiros 2.8M a Brazilian couple's motorhome adventures
  • @dubai_uaes 1.5M Dubai blogger and TikToker
  • @hangrybynature 1.7M Japan travel guide named Tina
  • @travelwithjaro 1.4M worldwide travel snippets for the younger folk
  • @annielovetravel 1.1M international travel + nature
  • @captainkatemccue 3.1M female captain of a Celebrity Cruise ship
  • @thecruisespotter 2.5M professional cruise ship videos by drones

Content creators don't have to be superstar influencers with over a million followers. You can find others who are wonderful in your eyes with just a few thousand or few hundred thousand followers. These are just some examples of influencers on TravelTok.

In conclusion, you are only limited by your imagination on TikTokTravel. If a hashtag doesn't exist, you are allowed to create one! It can be a purposeful misspelling, something you make up, or whimsical. For example, I created a hashtag #angelaineurope (Angela in Europe).

Remember to play around with being hyper-specific, and you might be surprised at the enjoyable content you can stumble upon. From funny, heartwarming, and entertaining to scary, heartbreaking cautionary tales. You can find it all on TravelTok.

I have never used TikTok - although my 16 yo daughter uses it extensively & shows me videos from time-to-time. Thank you for sharing this information! :)

Finally, a useful social network. Everyone really needs it now. Travel is becoming more and more popular every day and it is useful to have such an app in your phone. I, for example, have now booked a hotel for a trip on https://westgateresorts.com/hotels/nevada/las-vegas/ and am going to see everything I can in a short period of time.
