Tips for Camping

Whether you are a camping veteran or you are going for the first time, it is important to bring the right supplies and gear for your camping trip. Here are some tips to make your excursion the easiest and most comfortable possible.

Bring a Thick Sleeping Bag

Especially if you are going somewhere in colder weather or at a high altitude, you will need to invest in a good sleeping bag that will keep you warm in your tent. It is always a better idea to have a sleeping bag that has a thick, warm lining, because if it gets too hot, you can always unzip it, but you will have the extra cushion of warmth for lower temperatures. You may want to consider getting a zero degree sleeping back for extreme weather conditions. If you are hiking to your base camp, it may be a better idea to have a sleeping bag that is lightweight so that it is easy to carry from place to place.

Drive an All-Terrain Vehicle

Depending on where you are camping, it may be a good idea to bring a vehicle that is better for all terrains, and is accustomed to rocky or rough surfaces. For example, if you get a new truck that has tires better suited for the wilderness, you can bring it camping with you. It will also be able to store much of your supplies for camping, as well as other equipment that could be necessary. In addition, you can store a variety of coolers with perishable goods or emergency rations in case things do not go as planned. Be sure to bring a spare tire if one of yours gets punctured or damaged.

Pack Nonperishable Food

When you are camping, it is always a better option to bring food that will not spoil or go bad. Nonperishables include canned food, nuts and nutrition bars, and dry goods. Even if you want some form of meat, try something dry like beef jerky so that you do not have to worry about meat that has been tainted. Many canned items can still be heated over a fire, such as beans, to have a warm dinner and enjoy the camping experience to its fullest. You can even bring portable cookware that runs on gas, such as a stove, to create delicious meals with your nonperishable items, or simply roast them over an open flame.

Have a First Aid Kit

You never know what type of emergency you will encounter while camping, and it can sometimes be difficult to get medical help if you are further out in the wilderness. That is why it is integral to carry a first aid kit with you at all times during your trip. Be sure to have supplies that will treat common injuries, like cuts and infections, but it is also important to have things to help treat bee stings and snake bites, or harm caused by other wildlife. Be sure to also have an EpiPen on hand in case a camper has an unexpected allergic reaction to an animal, bug, or food.

Dress in Layers

Layering is advantageous when camping because it will be guaranteed to keep you warm, but they can also be taken off if temperatures increase. Wear a tighter layer as your base layer closest to the skin, to prevent moisture from seeping through. For your outermost layers, be sure to wear waterproof items so snow does not leak into your other layers of clothing. In general, it is best to not use cotton for your winter layers because it does not wick moisture away and is not very good for insulation. Materials like polyester and wool work best for insulation.

Planning your camping trip does not have to be a difficult process. With these tips, you are sure to be able to have a wonderful excursion that you will remember for a lifetime.
