Sydney is a massive city, not just by the size, but by its cultural diversity, its varied history and of course, the mix of people from many parts of the planet. The word ‘iconic’ can be correctly used when talking about Sydney but the number one thing that pops up in any traveller’s head is how expensive this sprawling city is. Sure, it is a bit exxy but I have rounded up some of the best tricks and hacks to make your life in Sydney easier.

From commuting for less, staying cheap, and exploring the underrated suburbs to combining food and sightseeing together, here are a couple of hacks that will come in handy on your next trip.

Tons of tourist attractions in one go!

While this list can be cast a shadow upon by the fact that different people have different lifestyles and spending habits, its main objective is to help the readers, mostly directed towards the average spender. When you’re new in Sydney, the best way to get to know about the city is onboard the dinner cruises on Sydney Harbour. The major drawcard of a dining cruise is its ultimate amalgamation of exquisite waterfront dining with epic views of Sydney’s much-admired icons. But why is this a hack? Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Luna Park, Fort Denison, along with other attractions right within your frame, paired with a sumptuous fare at a reasonable price, makes it a top attraction for both tourists and residents.

Even the Sydney Harbour lunch cruises for that reason, is a highly-recommended daytime-activity, offering you a slew of harbour attractions within a short time!

Explore the suburbs more

Sydney is not all giant skyscrapers and iconic edifices. There’s the suburbs where you can explore everyday Sydney, the more relaxed, laid back Sydney. Surry Hills and Newtown is my all-time favourite duo where you can enjoy a peaceful afternoon, checking out the hip vibes of the suburbs and talking to the lovely people, with my favourite drink in hand. Newtown is more quirky and bohemian–home to the splendid University of Sydney and other neo-gothic sandstone buildings, a plethora of Asian street food, several record shops and second-hand bookstores, and microbreweries. And the best part? They don’t take a toll on your wallet. Even Surry Hills, which is pretty close to Newtown offers an array of art galleries and theatres, along with arguably the city’s best cafes and bars!

Savings on basics

When it comes to the basics like accommodation, food and transport, I got some super-saver hacks for you to consider, especially if you're a student. Eating out is tempting but it adds up significantly to your budget. Save a ton by prepping meals at home, planning out meals for the week and freezing leftovers and make discount supermarkets like Aldi your go to. If you’re only a couple of minutes away from your destination, walk. Just walk. Get an Opal the instant you set foot in Sydney, as it can cut down a lot of expense from using public transport. If you're a student, use a bicycle as they are environment-friendly and good for your fitness. Lastly, where you stay can have a significant impact on your cost of living or budget. Be aware of utility bills and other additional costs. Holidays don't have to be expensive, just rent out a cosy hostel in King’s Cross. They are affordable, and only a couple of minutes away from the Opera House.

When you live long enough on these streets you learn many new ways to game the system. Take notice and keep these hot tricks right in your pockets and hack your life in Sydney for the better.
